act 1, scene 1
the pond

JIMIN stumbled his way through the foliage and pushed passed plants with outstretched branches. he had a scrape on his left palm and the beginning of a bruise on his right knee, but he pressed further forward.

he had no destination, but he didn't mind that. as long as he could get away from the foggy city for a while, he was fine. the life in the city and in the wooded area were drastically different.

in real real life, he was surrounded by the bustling of people and the excessive noise of transportation. he couldn't keep in his head for a single second without having to cater to a need of someone else's.

but in the forest—in his fantasy world—he was in a realm of wonder and creation. there were no expectations of him here in the woods. he was free to just be, and he fell in love with that.

a worn, dingy bag bounced against his back as he trudged on. he usually stayed closer to the outskirts of the trees, but something inside the forest was calling to him. he felt the need to explore the place he grew fond of; his second home.

so far, this outdoor dwelling mostly consisted of plants that poked at his bare legs and a mousy smell coming from the air.

regardless it mattered very little, for he was fine with being embraced by the minimal nature that seemed a little too dense.

somewhere in his heart, he knew he'd find something that would be the highlight of his day. a place as dense as this forest couldn't possibly only consist of pestering plants and mold and moss.

"you're protecting something," he rested his unscathed palm against the rough bark of an oak tree, "aren't you."

maybe he'd find a bed of exotic flowers, or a tree with branches low enough for him to begin climbing.

whatever it was, he could feel it tug at his chest, making him gravitate towards it like a lonely planet.

a squirrel scampered across his feet, not bothering to be frightened by him, while another one chased at it's tail. a bird chirped from somewhere above him in a song of happiness. a pair of blue butterflies fluttered over his shoulder and continued to dance away from him.

he was entranced. he followed them.

he was led deeper into the woods, never having thought the stretch of trees made it this far. the area seemed to get more crowded with nature and he felt encased by the thick plants sprouting up and above him.

as he ventured further on, trailing the pair of butterflies, the sky became less visible. most of what was above him were leaves of green and patches of golden sunlight that shone done like spotlights.

soon the canopy trees were accompanied by those of willows and he could hardly keep sight of the butterflies.

disenchantment was fierce in his veins as he struggled to keep up with the insects, fighting the pout wanting to droop on his lips.

he saw flutters of blue drift between the spiraling leaves and beaches of a willow tree on his right in front of him. he hastily made his way in the direction, feeling lighthearted again.

twigs, leaves, mushrooms, and flowers crunched underneath his mud stained boots. his kicked a few rocks out of his way and drew back the thick leaves of the tree.

surely enough, he found the butterflies. but with them, he discovered so much more.

the scenery supplied him with a landscape straight from a fairytale and he couldn't hold back his awestruck expression.

he stood at the bank of a pond whose waters swirled with a deep blue-purple mixture. light fog danced atop the calm waters and horsetails sprung from spots around the water.

a few water lilies decorated the pond that brought all sorts of creatures from dragon flies and butterflies, to small frogs and fish that peeked their heads to the surface.

the misty fog seemed to have a life of its own, dancing about the surface of the lake, and jimin knew he finally found his highlight.

he sat down beside the very edge of the water, bringing his backpack from around his shoulder and tugging at the zipper.he withdrew a moleskin notebook and a case filled with stationary art supplies.

he was glad he felt inspired enough to draw the landscape around him. he even giggled as the creatures interacted with him.

a small frog jumped onto the heel of his boot as he sat with his legs crossed. a butterfly found a spot to rest on the tip of his pencil after fluttering around his hair for a while.

jimin was content, finally, but oblivious to the pond in front of him that held more to it than he knew.

he never noticed the dark eyes staring at him from between the horsetails in the pond.
