Seven Mates for Seven Vampires

Casey & Rhett

Dinner tonight was fantastic. Rich, tangy flavor with just the right amount of zest served on warm plates in a relax atmosphere by candlelight. While drinks consisted of Coke and a glass of Boulevardier made from gin, Campari and sweet vermouth. Conversation with mutual, hilarious and a bit flirty at times. But then when isn't a dinner between two people supposed to be fun? Oh, that's right. Out in a public place for the whole world to see and hear.

Rhett raised his hand in the air, motioning for the young teenage female waitress over to our table with a friendly smile. The two exchanged words for a moment before she left and returned with the check. I offered to pay for half but he wouldn't let me, saying that it was his treat. But once the receipt was safely tucked away inside his wallet. Rhett escorted me from the booth with his hand placed gently on the small of my back as he walked closely behind me.

Stepping out into the night or in this case a crowded parking lot. The temperature in the town of Deathfall was a staggering eighty-four degrees with just a hint of rain moving in off the horizon. A car door opened nearby as Rhett kindly helped me up into the passenger seat of his pickup truck. I felt around for the strap that went to my seat-belt and buckled myself in by the time Rhett hopped inside and started the engine. Then he stomped on the gas and cranked the wheel while I gripped the armrest for support as if my life depended on it.

Racing down the road like a bat out of hell. I fumbled for the button that would lower the window as a rush of warm air hit me in the face. My dark sunglasses shielded my eyes from the howling wind as I sat back against the seat and enjoyed the sensation of feeling like I was flying high in the sky without a care in the world. In the foreground, the wind wasn't the only sound that filled the cabin. Music could be heard playing through the speakers as Rhett lowered his speed and rolled up my window.

"Can I ask you something?"

"Feel free." I replied.

"What's with the sunglasses? I mean, I see you wear them all the time even at night. Now, I have my suspicions. But I guess what I'm looking for is a little clarification."

"It's simple really. I'm blind."

There was complete silence in those first few moments before Rhett worked up the courage to speak again. "I'm sorry. I didn't know."

"It's alright. I'm not upset about it anymore. I've learned to cope with this for years now."

"Were you born blind?"

"Not at first. I was born with a condition known as Retinitis Pigmentosa. It's inherited."

"Jesus."

"There's something else too, that I think you should know about. For a while now I've started to notice a slight change in hearing loss. I'm not sure how long I have. But eventually I'll lose the ability to hear and that'll be it for me." I chuckled to myself. "Talk about a shitty life, huh?"
