Dracula
By the following night, everything was pretty much back to normal. But when I awoke, Nathan's side of the bed was completely empty. I sat up almost instantly, my hearing expanding outward through the walls of our hotel room. When I heard his heartbeat I relaxed a little and got out of bed, putting on a robe I found nearby before exiting the bedroom and heading downstairs. A door closed a second later followed by the smell of a fresh cooked meal. Nathan returned to the living room fully dressed, his color had returned to him thanks to my blood.
"You're up early," he said.
"Am I? What time is it?"
"8:30pm."
"Ah. Must've been a nightmare I suppose. What time did you get up?"
"7:00am."
"Who was that at the door just now? Room service?"
"Yeah. He just left. I had the fish. It was quiet good."
Moving towards the couch I sat down with a heavy sigh as Nathan accompanied me by sitting on my left. From across the way, the lights of the city glinted in the night. Not a single cloud was in the sky and only the stars appeared. As for the moon, she was bigger than I ever did see it.
"So..." Nathan began, "Have you decided when we're going to elope?"
"I'm not sure yet. What do you think?"
"How about Christmas Day?"
I nodded, my attention elsewhere. "I like it. I don't see any reason why we couldn't do it."
As Nathan went on and on about the idea of an intimate Christmas wedding, I couldn't help but shake the feeling that something was wrong. Suddenly, a sharp pain ripped through my skull as if it were splitting in half. The pain was so intense that I dropped to the floor and cried out in silence as Nathan appeared beside me, holding my hand. But I couldn't speak at least not yet anyways. Images of a darkened cave, a small pond and a gray, disheveled sunken silhouette of a man huddled in a corner behind a large rock.
The scene continued to play out until I saw his eyes open and his voice calling out to me. The pain ended as quickly as it began as Nathan breathed a sigh of relief. I, however, sat up in disbelief thinking how foolish I was to forget about him for so long. And why was he trying to contact me now? Without thinking, I headed upstairs and got dressed while on the phone with Nicolas, telling him that I was returning to the palace with Nathan and that I needed him just as soon as I arrived.
"I'll be waiting for you upon your arrival," he said.
"Good man. Also, see if you can find any blood bags. We'll be needing those as well."
"Got it."
I ended the call and raced back downstairs as I threw on my leather jacket with my sword still in place. Next was Nathan. I threw him over my shoulder and left the hotel room with him kicking and asking questions. Once in the elevator, we stopped a couple of times between floors as the passengers got on and off, their eyes looking at the two us but they didn't say a word. Out in the lobby I put Nathan down as he fixed his clothes and demanded an explanation for our sudden departure.
