Dracula
The ring lingered in the palm of my hand as my mind tried to make sense of it all. As for my undead heart, it sure hurt like a son-of-a-bitch. I'm not ready to marry you yet. Those words echoed inside my head like a gunshot wound to the chest. Angered beyond measure of a reasonable doubt, I stood up and bolted for the palace as my newly appointed head of security met me in the foyer. Nicolas Gabor finished putting on his jacket as he quickly safety checked his primary firearm and then holstered it.
"Nathan's gone missing." I said. "I need you to help me track him down."
"I'm way ahead of you. I caught him stealing the Audi out front and have begun tracking the vehicle as we speak. He's making good time if I do say myself. Currently he's still in Romania and heading for the Bulgarian border. Given his start time he should cross the border just a little after two o'clock in the morning."
I growled as I paced back and forth. "Fuck! That's not enough time to get to him before sunrise. Alright, keep an eye on him and let me know the minute you hear something. Is that understood?"
"Yes, Your Majesty."
I headed upstairs and went to our room, shutting the door behind me. My connection to Nathan was strong and since I knew he didn't have his cell phone on hand. I decided to try one other thing that might get me in touch with him. Sitting on the floor with my back perfectly aligned, I closed my eyes and took a deep breath as I began to concentrate and focus at the task at hand. My mind projected a three hundred and sixty-degree view of the world around me as I sat in the passenger seat of the stolen Audi.
The needle on the speedometer maintained a current speed of about sixty miles per hour. Thank God he wasn't speeding. With one hand on the wheel, his tear-stained eyes stayed on the road ahead as the headlights paved the way. I stared at his face, but I could not feel his emotions due to my current form. Essentially I was like a ghost. My vampire body stayed in constant contact as my mind stretched itself beyond the normal limit. Like a rubber band I could feel the connection tighten to the point of snapping apart.
"Show me where you're going, baby." I said. "I'm not giving up on us. Not now, not ever."
A road sign up ahead read: Bulgarian Border fifty miles. I looked at the clock on the dash. The time was now twelve fifty-nine pm. Nicolas said that Nathan wouldn't reach the Bulgarian border until about two o'clock in the morning. I reached for his hand but felt no contact. Then the car drifted away from view as I returned to my body and lost sight of him. Shit. The further he gets away, the harder it is to keep track of him.
I hated feeling like this. Powerless and agitated. My vision blurred as I worked getting my frustration under control. My hands tightened into fists as my nails turned into claws, breaking the skin and drawing a little blood. When I released them, I noticed the ring still in my right hand. It had left a perfect indentation in the center of my palm. As for Nathan's engagement ring, I wiped off what little blood there was and placed it on the nightstand.
