Chapter 42

The ER and NICU staff swarmed around Rory and Finley on the stretcher. Rory reluctantly gave up her baby to the capable medical staff. She hoped they wouldn't kill her baby by accident. Logan was right there to hold her as they took Finley, and Lorelai was on the other side.

Dr. Kim and Finn brought in Emily. Dr. Kim explained everything and they ushered Emily to a room as well. Everyone was left in the waiting room.

Colin and Robert went off to the cafeteria to find some suitable drinks and food for their family.

Rory sat clinging to Logan, as he held her he tried to soothe her, but there is no soothing happening until they know what is wrong with their daughter.

Lorelai was pacing between Emily's room and the waiting room. She was so exhausted, and she hoped this stress wouldn't do her in.

Mitchum sat next to his only daughter, holding her close waiting for news on his newest granddaughter. He has sent an update text to Shira to keep her in the loop.

"Family for Finley Huntzberger?" A doctor had appeared.

Everyone stood up and took a step towards him.

"Woah! You're all family?" Dr. Blake said.

"Yes" They all said in unison.

"Ok, let me try this again. Finley Huntzberger's parents?" The Doc tried again.

Rory and Logan stepped forward. The doctor told them to follow him. He took them back to their baby. She looked so fragile laying there with all the tubes, so broken, and to think 10 hours ago she was in a screaming match with her brother.

"Mr. and Mrs. Huntzberger, " The doctor started.

"Please call us Logan and Rory, what is wrong with our daughter." Logan said, putting a hand on Rory's shoulder. She was holding Finley's hand trying to keep it together.

"Your daughter, was saved by the baby monitor bootie that was on her foot. Had she not had that I don't think you would have caught it in time." Dr. Blake said to the parents.

"Caught what in time?" Rory said looking up at him with tears in her eyes.

"Your daughter, has had an episode of respiratory distress syndrome. It has been caught in time, to be easily treated without any long term side affects. However, She will be a guest with us at the children's hospital wing, for 2-3 weeks. We want to give her the treatments for her lungs. This will include medicines through her iv and we do want to keep her on this breathing tube for at least the next 3 days, and give her lungs some time to heal. We will also need to insert a tube down her nose, so she will be able to receive nutrition, so we can keep her growing at her current rate. I don't see any reason at this time that Finley will not make a full recovery. It will just take some time. Do you have any questions?" Dr. Blake finished, giving the new parents an opening.

"Dr. Blake, how did this happen? She was fine or she seemed fine earlier today! Did I do something wrong?" Rory asked with tears in her eyes. She felt like the lowest person on the planet, she loved this little girl and her brother more than life itself and she couldn't prevent this pain.

"No, no you did nothing wrong. This is actually very common with multiple births, and births that occur in c-section. I do have to say though, never get rid of you monitor booties. That is what you did absolutely right and it saved your daughter's life. Now, I have to go check on a few other babies in the NICU, but they should be able to move her to a room shortly and I will check back on you guys when you get there." Dr. Blake finished. He shook their hands and walked out.

Rory was holding on to one little hand while Logan held on to the other. They didn't want to leave their girl yet to go tell their family.

"I love you Finley Lorelai Honor Huntzberger, mommy and daddy love you and we are right here, we are going to be with you every step of the way until you're healthy and ready to go home and see your brother. He misses you terribly. Grandma Lorelai, Great-grandma Emily, Grandpa Mitchum, Aunt Honor and Uncle Josh, and Uncles Finn, Colin, and Robert are all here. They're all here for you little girl, and Grandpa Luke is at home watching your brother, but he'll be here too. We all love you very much and we all want nothing more than for you to be happy and healthy and grow up big and strong." Rory started crying as she kissed her little girls fingers. She looked over at her babies father, and saw the tears on his face, but the glimmer of hope in his eyes, and she just fell even more in love with her life, no matter what rough patches they had to go through. As long as she had Logan, Finley, and Richard everything would be ok.
