My chest is heavy, weighed down by a million bricks. I feel empty, like my heart was torn out of my body and my chest cavity is a vacuum.
"Jill..."
"Oh for chrissakes, he's still pining over that stupid girl!"
That voice... why does it send hot anger through my veins?
"Calm down, Sir. He is still in a fragile state after the detox."
"My son can withstand a little detoxification! It's his mental state I'm worried about. All that time in the dome might've altered his brain chemistry-"
"Sir, memory altering was only done to the contest participants. Your son was not affected. He's only a little shaken by the tranquilizers. That's all."
"I can't believe it took so long to get him out. You nitwits! Even with the senator's son involved. Incompetent buffoons!"
"Calm down, Diggby. All that matters is they got him out in the nick of time."
"Senator. I shudder to think what might've happened if they didn't."
"Don't be silly. Nothing would've happened as long as my Mathias was still in there."
"That stupid girl just won't leave my Thomas alone. After all she's done to him... why?"
"Diggby, your son isn't the only casualty here, remember? Don't worry. After wave three has been unleashed, that girl will cease to be a problem."
"And the experiment?"
"It will proceed as planned."
"Good. My audience is hungry."
