Valentine's Day Part 1

Albus gulped as the boys around him began stripping, first pulling off their shirts, and then discarding their pants until he was surrounded by boys in boxers, Y-fronts, and everything in between. He didn't know why he'd decided to do this. When Rose and Roxanne had come running to him excitedly to suggest he volunteer to deliver roses to people around the school for Valentine's Day, he'd turned them down immediately. But then Rose, clever, persuasive Rose, had told him how romantic it would be to get all in costume and deliver a rose to Scorpius. Scorpius, his best friend, whom he'd been in love with for years now, but he'd never been brave enough to act on those feelings.

"Come on Al!" Rose had cajoled. "It's Valentine's Day, the most romantic day of the year! You've got to give this a chance."

Roxanne has nodded vigorously and added, "Plus, it's your last year of school together. You'll be going to different universities and everything."

Albus was about to argue again but then he realised his cousins were right. After this year, he and Albus would be going their separate ways. They'd agreed to get an apartment together if they went to nearby universities, but otherwise, Albus would be further from his best friend than he'd ever been before.

"Alright. I'll do it."

Rose and Roxanne squealed, Rose throwing her arms around him, and he hugged her back, grinning at Roxanne over her shoulder.

And then he remembered one slightly important thing.

"Guys... What if Scorp's not gay?"

"Oh psh," Roxanne said with an airy wave of her hand. "He is so obviously gay. Well," she added, "gay for you, at least."

"But Roxy, we don't know that for sure."

She exchanged a glance with Rose. "Trust me Al, we do."

And with a smirk from Rose and a light punch on the arm from Roxanne, the two girls had walked off, arms linked, leaving him to wonder how the hell he would bring himself to tell Scorpius how he felt about him next Tuesday.

Now that it was Tuesday, Albus was terrified. Thoughts raced through his mind, each worse than the next. What if Scorpius was straight? Or even worse, he was gay, but liked another guy? What if it ruined their friendship forever? He sunk down onto one of the benches in the change room, resting his head in his hands.

"Al?" Albus looked up and found James and Lily standing unconcernedly amongst the other boys, staring at him worriedly.

"Hey," Albus mumbled, fiddling with the skirt of the tutu he was supposed to put on and avoiding his siblings' eyes.

"Hey," James said softly, and that almost made Albus look up, because James sounded sad and sympathetic and quiet, an unsettling change from his usual raucous nature.

Then Lily sat down on his other side and laid her head on his shoulder.

"Oh Albus," she said as James looped an arm around his younger brother's shoulders. "Everything will turn out okay. You know nothing can wreck what you and Scorpius have now."

James gave Albus a one armed squeeze and looked into his brother's eyes.

"Yeah, Al. And even if things are different after this, you've got to try. You can't just keep feeling about Scorp like this without telling him."

Albus sighed and hung his head, taking Lily's hand as she offered it.

"I know. I know."

James tugged the pink tulle skirt he'd been sitting on out from under him and held it up, wrinkling his nose in disgust.

"You actually have to wear this? You'll look so gay."

Lily and Albus raised their eyebrows at him.

"Oh. Oh right."

"Hey, you two. What are you doing in here? You don't even go to this school any more," a burly boy in Albus' year said to James. "And you're a girl!" He said to Lily.

"I'm here to support my brother," James declared, glaring defiantly up at the boy.

Lily tossed her long fiery mane over her shoulder and looked at him coolly, her brown eyes so like her mothers, and in turn her grandmother's, piercing.

"And I'm not even attracted to boys," Lily stated.

The boy eventually stalked off, exiting the change room with the rest of the boys trailing after him, leaving James, Lily and Albus alone.

"Now you can get changed," Lily said brightly, already unbuttoning his shirt. She knew Albus hated getting changed around other boys. "Quick quick quick! Classes start in ten minutes and you're supposed to be delivering roses as soon as the bell goes."

Albus shimmied into the skirt, crossing his arms self consciously as he straightened up.

James looked as though he was trying very hard not to laugh.

"You- you look great in pink!"

Lily laughed from where she was scrabbling inside her bag for something. Albus paled as she pulled out a makeup bag, already wielding a lipstick and mascara.

"No no no. No way," Albus said, holding his hands up and backing away from his sister apprehensively.

"Why not?" Lily pouted. "Scorpius lets me do his makeup sometimes."

"And people wonder whether or not the boy is gay," James muttered to himself.

"I'm not wearing makeup, Lily. Besides, we don't have enough time."

"Fine," Lily huffed, stuffing the tubes back in her bag and slinging it onto her shoulders.

James leapt up and held the door open for her, and Albus followed more reluctantly.

"How come you even carry makeup Lils? It's not like you wear it," James asked.

Lily tucked her hair behind her ears with the hand that wasn't gripping Albus's arm and looked across at James. He noticed bemusedly that because they were flanking him there was no escape. He was really going to do this.

"Well Roxy and Dom let me do their makeup sometimes, and like I said before, Scorpius does as well. He looks gorgeous with eyeliner," Lily mused.

"Ah. Oh, Al, isn't this your first stop? Room B17?"

Albus glanced down at the map he was holding.

"Yeah. Scorpius isn't in this one thank Merlin."

"Well, we'll see you later then mate. Good luck. Love you," James leaned forward to kiss his cheek and Lily squeezed his hand.

"Everything will turn out wonderfully, Al. Love you," she smiled.

"I love you guys too," Albus said, and stood and watched the retreating backs of his siblings until they turned the corner.
