On Scorpius's first day of school - real school, not the silly muggle school his dad had made him go to where he'd turned the electronic whiteboard into an aquarium, this was Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry - he had no friends. He was Scorpius Hyperion Malfoy, and everyone knew it. A Malfoy. So he was alone.

Rose Granger-Weasley had heard about Scorpius Malfoy. Her father had told her not to get to know him. Rose, being Rose, did exactly the opposite of what her father had told her to do, and developed an instant crush on him.

Albus Potter saw Scorpius for the first time in a Transfiguration class, and when Scorpius transformed a plain white tissue into a pink floral handkerchief, that was when Albus realised that boys could create pretty things.

Scorpius was wary around the boys in his dormitory, as they were around him, except for one boy with dark, dark hair and bright green eyes. The boy smiled at him. Scorpius smiled back.

In their second year at Hogwarts, after the summer holidays when Scorpius and Albus became firm friends, Rose marched up to Scorpius and asked him to be her boyfriend. He said yes. Albus watched from a corner and wondered why he felt so - what was that word his brother James had declared he felt when Victoire said they could never get married because they were cousins? Heartbroken.

It was during a blustering storm, with torrents of rain so heavy Herbology was cancelled, that Scorpius and Albus became best friends, huddled by the fireplace in the one free armchair for warmth. Scorpius fell asleep on Albus's chest and woke up to find the common room deserted and Albus asleep beneath him.

"Are we best friends?" He murmured tentatively when Albus woke up.

"Yes," Albus said, and Scorpius had never heard him sound so sure of anything.

Third year consisted of a lot of fighting, mainly due to Albus's denial of his homosexuality. Scorpius kissed him, because he figured that would make everything better. It didn't.

Rose broke up with Scorpius when she heard the news and started spending much more time with Albus. Scorpius started talking to James. Or listening to James, who only ever talked about himself. Rose missed Scorpius. Albus missed Scorpius. Scorpius missed both of them.

"You are such an idiot, Al!" Lily Luna Potter exclaimed, and then she smacked her brother across the face. "You're gay, okay?"

"No I'm-" Albus started to say, but she raised a hand threateningly and he fell abruptly silent.

"You're gay you're gay you're gay!" She screeched, until Albus burst into tears and shame flooded her whole body. Albus spent the whole afternoon sobbing into his younger sister's shoulder.

The next day, Rose and Lily, who had always fought easily, had a shouting match in the Great Hall that ended with a bloody nose on Lily's part and a totally destroyed book on Rose's.

After the two girls fought, Scorpius decided he and Albus needed to talk. This time when he kissed Albus, gently and slowly and with the utmost care, it made a lot of things better. Lily hugged both of them, and Rose, who'd never quite gotten over Scorpius, kissed him sadly on the cheek and told him unconvincingly that she was happy for him.
