CHAPTER TWELVE
❛ CUT OFF ONE HEAD ❜EVER SINCE NICK FURY WAS declared to be dead, coming in for work felt like something unnecessary. She knew who Alexander Pierce was in S.H.I.E.L.D. and how everything would most likely turn out after Nick Fury had passed.
Never once had she felt like he was a trustworthy man. She kept it in for fear of false accusations. Sophia hasn't been back since last night she came home, Jane assumed she was on a mission.
Work wasn't as smooth as it was before. It was clear to anyone who saw her that she was not in her normal state. Which made them press even further. Somehow half the people who came up to her knew that she was there the night Nick Fury had died. Just when she was getting sick of all the questions, there was rumor going around the building that the director's death was an inside job she had been a part of.
Accusations like that was just the type she was avoiding all this time. She thought that it was absurd, but what can she do when almost the whole building is against her. She continued to mindlessly walk around the building like she always does on breaks. She soon decided to take a trip to the toilet.
"—I can't believe he's a fugitive now," said a voice not too long after Jane had gotten inside a stall. She wondered who the fugitive was, but dismissed it in her mind since she couldn't care less about fugitives unless she had a mission.
"Tell me about it. Aren't Avengers supposed to be on our side?" Another one said. Since Clint went home, she instantly thought of Natasha and Steve, who were both absent today, and the possibilities of them talking about her. But if it was, it wouldn't make sense since she has done nothing but witnessed the director's death.
"It's such a shame," the first voice said, "they even said he refused to share anything about that night."
Knowing Steve wouldn't check his phone, she immediately texted Natasha, asking where she was.
"You think he—"
"Hey, they need you at the control room." Said an unfamiliar voice. With that, the three of them rushed out and went their separate ways.
She knew Steve was acting strange for a reason. With Steve being a fugitive, thoughts of leaving work crossed her mind. Though it was tempting, she thought she should stay in case anything else happens so she'd know.
Soon after, she was walking along the second floor close to the lobby. Everything seemed fine before a body fell from an elevator. She quickly raised her arm out of instinct and used her powers to save the man from the impact. Once he stood, he looked up to see Jane on the balcony with her arm still raised, and a shocked expression. She recognized the man who soon ran out the building to be Steve.
