New York City, New York
The 1920's

THE TWELVE YEAR OLD GIRL was peacefully shopping at the market with her mother when she saw a bunch of kids at a back alley in the corner of her eye. She ignored it and helped her mother. "Sarah, sweetheart, would you be a dear and pick the apples for me, please?" Her mother asked her.

She went straight to the stand where they sell the apples, though she was constantly distracted by the group of kids in the back alley she saw earlier. She handed the apples to her mother and asked her if she could go look around.

"Sure, sweetheart. Just meet me back here in ten minutes." Her mother smiled.

She nodded at her mother and walked straight to the distraction. As she got closer, she could see that there were three boys, it was a two-to-one fight. Sarah frowned, it didn't seem fair, nor did it seem right at all.

"Hey!" She approached the three. "Stop!" She called out, but they didn't seem to hear her so she grab a boy's shoulder — who was kicking a somewhat scrawny kid.

"That's not right!" She yelled at him. "And what are you gonna do about it, huh?" He turned to her. She wasn't afraid of him, so she took it to herself to slap him across the face, but he didn't seem to feel hurt.

"You fight like a girl." He mocked.

Sure, her slap didn't hurt him that much, but he wasn't going to let her go that easy. He was taking a stance, his knuckles were ready to punch her. Sarah closed her eyes and waited for the punch, but it never came.

Before the boy could connect his knuckles to her face, another kid already blocked it.

"You don't hit a girl!" The boy said as he saved both Sarah and the scrawny kid. "That's disrespectful." He added.

Once the bullies saw that he could block every move they did towards him, soon enough they walked away — saying he wasn't worth it — as if their pride had been hurt. The boy helped the scrawny kid get up to his feet.

"Thank you, for that." Sarah smiled, turning to the two.

"Eh, no problem." The boy said to her. "I'm Bucky and this is Steve." He introduced and extended his hand.

"Sarah." She smiled and took his hand and then Steve's.

Steve let out a small laugh. "That's my mom's name." Steve's laugh gave a wider smile to Sarah's face.

"You all right?" She asked him with that smile still plastered on her face. "Yeah, I've been better." He answered.

"So what brings you here, to this . . . part of town?" Bucky asked her. "Same as everybody else, shopping." She gestured to the marketplace not too far from where they are and they give her a nod.
