CHAPTER SIX
❛ NEW YORK, NEW YORK. ❜SHE SAT ON the corner of her small bed. Trying to convince herself that Coulson being dead was not her fault, but she couldn't help but think that she could've done better, that she should've done better. She's not one for talking to herself, but she sure as hell is one for overthinking.
Her room was dark, having no windows, the only source of light was a table lamp. A knock on the door startled her, though she didn't want to open it.
"Ma'am?" She heard Steve's voice from the other side of the door. What could he possibly want to manage to go all the way to her room. He knocked once more.
"It's Jane." She replied—she felt that 'Ma'am' was too much and it had been bothering her since day one, but she didn't want to seem rude.
Steve took it as a slight permission to get in, but he wasn't quite sure of it.He opened the door, making light enter, and put slightly half of his body inside. "Can I come in?" He asked.
"You're already in." She sighed.
"Okay." He opened the door wider to let himself in and walked towards where she was so he can sit in front of her.
"Look, we're all shocked of what happened, but right now, we need your help. I'll expla-"
"That's what Fury said." She scoffed. "I cant go. I'm not what you are, or any of you for that matter. I'm not a hero, so why bother playing the part?" She finished.
Steve looked at her. "This isn't about being the hero, it's about wether or not you're willing to help."
"Don't get me wrong, I want to help, I just don't know how. I saw a man die in front of me, Steve. I don't think I was ready for that." She said. "I don't even know why I came on board in the first place. I just...wanted a chance, and now I know that I'll never get that chance." She finished
"Who was ever ready?" Steve questioned. "If you want to go home and hide, that's okay. But I need to know if you're on board to help. Here's that one chance. It's now or never."
✿
"Time to go." Steve said to Natasha in the infirmary room. "Go where?" She questioned. "I'll tell you on the way. Can you fly one of those jets?" Steve asked her.
Before Natasha can answer him, Clint came in through the other door. "I can."
Steve looked at Natasha and then looks back at Clint after she nods. "You got a suit?" Steve asked him. "Yeah." He answered.
"Then suit up." Steve said walking away.
"Wait, where are you going?" She asked him, raising her voice a bit.
