Don't pretend you don't have one or two of these, you pesky Writers.
Put yourself in this situation. One day, you're scrolling through Wattpad, and you get a notification that your favorite story has been updated! With joy, you quickly click on it with a smile on your face and prepare for another dose of feels, just like last week.
But then, to your horror, the chapter isn't called "Everything Is Okay" or "He Isn't Actually Dead" or "Your OTP Kiss".
Instead, you see three chilling symbols that causes anyone to throw their phone against the wall or slam their laptop to the ground: A/N.
Ho.Ly.Fre.Ak.Ing.He.Ck.
And your anger only grows when you decide it may be a good Author's Note- maybe one about a new book or a sequel- but instead, it's something really stupid like this:
Why the heck would I want to know about this boy I've never seen? I want to read your story about the unicorn and Hillary Clinton who gives birth to Pepe who falls in love with Four from Divergent! Gosh darn it!
Not only that, but sometimes the A/N's are really depressing. You feel really bad for being mad after reading it, and you go off and write a long comment about how sorry you are for the author. That, or you just sit in bed frowning because you realize how incredibly selfish you are for being mad at a person going through a rough time.
Another type of A/N might not even be an A/N, but an advertisement. These may be good updates, but most of the time it's just about a friend's book that is more than likely about vampires or a princess who falls in love with a horse or some crazy thing like that. The book the advertise is of no relation to the genre of that book- hence, most won't even bother to 'head over and check it out'.
I mean... why? I was fine reading about Hillary Clinton's labor, I don't want to read erotica. I get you may want to help your friend get reads- and that's cool. But maybe do it at the end of a regular chapter, that way people are more than likely to actually check it out.
In the end, Author's Notes serve a good purpose. They keep readers informed of the writer's schedule, and to be fair, some of them are hilarious and they hold good news. But cut the advertising and boy drama crap. The best place for those are at the end of a chapter after a refreshing or thrilling read.
Until next time, WHERE'S THE PIZZA?
