Twenty One : Saffron

I didn’t know what to wear to my birthday dinner. This was going to be my first purposely-initiated outing with Harry Styles. This was going to be my first official captured moment as Saffron Davies, daughter of Katherine Anderson – owner of Burberry. I didn’t think jeans and a jacket would suffice. I had to make a statement because in this world, image was everything and I needed to do everything I could to maintain my strong front. And what did that mean? Black. Black clothing really was my signature as Harry had reminded me on numerous occasions.

So shuffling through my wardrobe, I pulled out a black skirt with a leather fold, a block high-neck crop top, black knee-high socks and black boots. I tried on a few things before eventually settling on something between formal and street-smart. After doing my make-up and hair as well as packing my black tote bag, I finally deemed myself ready, Good thing too because Darci was yelling at me from downstairs to hurry up.

I skipped down the stairs and together we took my car to Casa Vega. I’d been there once before with mum and dad and from what I remember, it was a really great place for privacy—just what I’d been hoping for.

As expected, there were paparazzi lurking outside of the fine dining restaurant. They didn’t really give me a second glance as Darci and I quickly made our way inside. We kept our heads down and walked briskly, and they didn't think anything of it. I may have been Katherine's daughter but I hadn't done anything truly significant yet.

Once inside, we gave the waiter our names and he instantly guided us to a table. As we approached the red-clothed table in the far corner, I spotted a few familiar people I’d become friendly with recently—Niall, Ed, Lou and Lux, Sophie and Laura from work and of course Harry himself. I smiled at the intimacy of it all as Harry stood up to greet me.

He gave Darci and I a casual kiss on the cheek before grinning at me. “Happy Birthday Saffron,” he said quietly. “You look nice tonight.”

“Thanks Harry. And thanks for organising this,” I replied as we sat at the table.

He winked at me. “Oh, this is only the beginning.”

Before I could ask further questions, I was swallowed up by more birthday wishes from the rest of the people on the table. We chatted easily, ordered food and ate that same food all within the space of a couple of hours.

I was having a really great time so when they brought out a cake and the table sang Happy Birthday, I couldn't help but let my smile glow brighter. They set the cake down in front of me and closing my eyes, thinking of my wish, I blew out the candles.

Everyone cheered and clapped and I sipped at my drink. "Thanks everyone for coming, this has been a really great birthday. I haven't really had proper friends in LA for a while so it was nice to meet and get to know you all." I raised my glass. "To new beginnings because, fuck, this is going to be a bumpy journey from here on out."

Everyone laughed and after clinking glasses, I drained my glass of wine. We ate some cake before Harry cleared his throat. "The night isn't over yet though, it's only 8 o'clock! Come on all, we have places to be."

I looked at him curiously but he merely winked so after he covered the check, we all followed him to the door. Before we walked through though, we discussed plans. "Straight to your car, heads down," Harry said, mimicking Victoria's voice.

Lou bit her lip mischievously. "I may, or may not have Instagramed a video of our table showing it was Saffron's birthday."

"Victoria's going to hate you," Niall said with a laugh.
