I felt the bed moving and I reached out my hand to grab onto a familiar hand. Then I opened my eyes and looked into the worried eyes of Ted.
“What are you doing?” I asked in a surprisingly hoarse voice.
“Shhh...you probably shouldn’t talk so much in your condition,” he said sadly. Right now he seemed so heart broken and I just couldn’t figure out how to stop him from having such a pained look.
“You owe me an explanation,” I croaked. I continued some more so I could get out what was on my mind. “Tell me who the girl is, who Raquel is, why my hand was on fire, why the girl wants to kill me, and why I pass out every time you touch my forehead,” I said.
He chuckled sadly. “One question at a time. All your questions will soon be answered but it’s not time you hear all of them yet,” he said.
He rested me on the pillow and promised to be back as soon as he could with breakfast. He wasn’t lying because in ten minutes he came with a plate of three pancakes and eggs and bacon on the side, with orange juice.
“Yummy,” I said with a smile on my face. Ted placed a tray with all the food on it over me and I began eating. I savored each bite because this man can make such heavenly pancakes.
“You eat, and I’ll answer your questions,” he ordered. I nodded my head because I wanted to continue eating.
“The girl who attacked you is named Celia, Cece for short, and she’s my sister. The reason she…dislikes…you,” he stole a quick peek at me,” is because she thinks I’m wasting my time on you and she wants me to be with another girl, that happens not to be you. That is all I’m answering for now.”
“No way!” I protested. “There has to be more! What are you Ted? Your sister referred to me as human. If I’m human and you’re not, what are you?”
“Dang Cece,” he muttered so low I was positive it wasn’t meant for my ears.
“You’re right, I’m not human. I’m something that can either cause pain or bring peace to your race. I’m a…” he stopped and stared at the door. I looked at him with my eyebrows knitted together in confusion. Then I turned my sights to the door when Cece busted in the room.
“How dare you tell her!” Cece yelled outraged. Ted made eye contact with her and they seemed to be communicating wordlessly. I looked back and forth between them and yet they still said nothing. Giving up on them I began eating my food again. Whatever they were saying took a long time because I was able to finish all my food, including the eggs, bacon, and the orange juice. When I finished I placed the tray on the bedside table.
Cece suddenly sighed and gritted her teeth. “Good morning…girl,” she spat out.
“Nicely,” corrected Ted.
“Good morning, whatever your name is,” she said nicer.
“Nina,” I filled in for her.
“What?” she asked me.
“Nina is my name,” I repeated.
“Celia,” she replied. Then everything got awkward. She came by the bed and sat in a chair that was placed directly in front of Ted.
“If we’re going to tell her then I want to know what she is to us and why Raquel doesn’t know where you are or about her.” Celia said while looking at me.
“In all due time sister,” said Ted trying to calm her down.
“I want answers and I want them now,” demanded Celia.
