Your POV
“(Y/N)! Can you help me with these boxes?” Your boss calls from the back room.
“Be right there!” you call back. You work part time at a game shop in a corner of the local mall. You don’t earn much, but it’s enough to live off, and you get employee perks of free games once in a while. And as bosses go, Fred was as easy-going as they come.
You go to the back room and see the mess of boxes. “New shipment?” you guess.
Fred’s expression is sour. It looks odd on the usually cheerful man. “Honestly, you’d think those kids would at least stack the boxes! Why do they always hire amateurs?!”
You leave him to rant at the shipping people and begin to clean up the mess. You agree with his sentiments, but it feels strange hearing people in their late twenties called ‘those kids.’
The bell at the front of the store rings. “Ah, I’ll get it,” he says quickly, dashing to the front desk. You continue sorting boxes when you hear him exclaim in surprise and delight. “Well, color me surprised! I didn’t expect to see you until later, if at all!”
You hear embarrassed laughter as whoever it is replies, “Well, I didn’t mean to stop here, but when I saw you were open...”
“Well, I certainly don’t mind the business. We’ve got a new shipment today, maybe something you want came in. Hey, (Y/N), how’s that coming?”
“I’d say as good as it’ll get before the mob arrives,” you reply, stepping out from the back. You notice the man Fred was talking to looking over the shelves. You can’t see his face from this angle. He’s wearing a green hoodie with the hood up and plain blue jeans.
“(Y/N), this is Cry. He’s one of our more regular customers.” The man turns toward you, and you’re surprised to see he wears a white pokerface mask, concealing his face completely.
He sticks out his hand. “Nice to meet you.”
“You, too.” You shake the proffered hand, noticing how cold it is. Cry, you think. Isn’t that the name of that one YouTuber?
“So, (Y/N),” Fred puts in, “Did you see anything back there worth suggesting?”
(Later)
You sigh a bit as you flop down on a bench outside the mall. You’d already texted Lauren, who happily decided she was taking you somewhere, ignoring your protests and warning you to wait outside or else. So here you are.
While you wait, you think back to work. It turned out you and Cry had similar interests in games, so Fred had left you to make recommendations while he shelved the new games. The two of you chatted for a while, but then the crowds started really gathering, so he left. Probably didn’t like crowds.
You think for a moment. He seems so much like that one guy you’ve been watching lately, but you didn’t really know if it was him. And it’s not like you can just go up and ask hey, are you a famous YouTuber?
You snort at your thoughts. “What is this, a fan fic?” you say jokingly to yourself.
“What? Your life’s a fan fic? (Y/N), don’t tell me you met a new guy already! You just dumped that last jerk!” You jump a few feet, realizing that Lauren was sitting on the bench next to you.
“L-Lauren, when’d you get here?” you ask, startled.
“Little bit ago, but you were spacey again. So, what’s like a fan fic? C’mon, tell me!”’
You sigh. “Lauren, I don’t really want to talk about it. Different subject?”
“Fine, whatever. Let’s go already, we’ve got things to do!” She drags you off, laughing.
Cry’s POV
After I leave the game shop, I wander around in the mall a bit more. I still have to do the stuff I came here for in the first place. A few people give me strange looks because of the mask, but I can deal with that. I’m just worried someone will recognize me.
As I head out to my car, I find myself thinking of (Y/N). She looked like she might know me from somewhere, but she didn’t say anything, so maybe not. On another topic, her (h/c) hair is really pretty.
I pause, seeing her on a bench near the parking lot. I start to head over so I can say hi, but some girl with green streaks in her hair beats me to the bench. (Y/N) chats with her for a minute. Then the other girl drags (Y/N) off to her car, both of them laughing.
I shrug. We traded numbers at the store, so it’s not like I can’t get in touch with her. I dropped into my car and drove home.
Your POV
You flop onto your bed, exhausted. Hanging out with Lauren should be an Olympic event. She dragged you all over, showing you some new shops she found and occasionally stopping for a snack.
You check Skype – no new messages. Nothing new uploaded to YouTube, either. So you pull on your PJ’s and sit on your bed.
You stare at the window, noticing the strangely bright moon. Knowing what happens next, you pull yourself out the window. As usual, you fly out for a minute, then begin feeling lonely.
Then you suddenly feel scared.
That’s strange; even though you have acrophobia, the heights in these dreams never bothered you before. But you’re suddenly very scared that you’re going to fall.
You hear a loud noise behind you – nothing specific, just loud. You try to turn around, but you suddenly feel too dizzy to see.
Then everything goes black.
???’s POV
I stretch out on my bed, yawning. I hadn’t gotten much done; I didn’t even do any gaming stuff. Too tired.
I glance outside, feeling a bit fuzzy. Then I blink; the moon is overly large and bright.
“What the heck?” I mutter as I push the window open and poke my head out. “I’m asleep already?”
I look down to see (Y/N) shove herself out the window and fly away. I’d noticed the two of us had been in the same dreams lately, but I didn’t really pay attention.
I watch her soar into the sky, smiling slightly. I’m about to go back inside when I see a blurred shape following her.
Crap.
I shove myself out the window and fly after her. I hear a strangely crazy-sounding voice teasing me. “What are you doing, going after little blurs in the air? You said yourself, it’s just a dream.”
“Shut it,” another voice, calmer, scolds it. “You’ve said yourself, dreams can kill.”
“Both of you be quiet,” a third voice cuts in. I stop midair. A girl, maybe ten, is floating directly in front of me. She’s smiling, but a crazy smile, not cute at all. She looks familiar, but I can’t place why. A little further on, (Y/N) is admiring the stars, oblivious to us.
“Why are you here?” the girl asks.
“To make sure she’s safe,” I reply simply.
“What do you care? She’s a stranger, isn’t she?”
I don’t reply, so the calm voice speaks for me. “Why would it matter to you?”
Her smile broadens. “Because I want to know what happens next.”
"What do you mean by-" A loud noise goes off in front of me, cutting me off and almost making me fall. (Y/N) hears and starts to turn, but pauses midway through and passes out, falling like a rock.
I swear and dive after her, the girl laughing as though this is the best entertainment ever.
Maybe it is. How should I know?
