“This isn’t going to work out, Sam,” he said, staring at the ceiling.

She looked up from the book she had been reading and cleared her throat.

“What?”

He sighed heavily, but turned his head to meet her gaze. The pillow made a whispering noise as he moved, and he wished he could just go to sleep instead of having this conversation.

“You can’t move in. I… I can’t do this. It’s going too fast. It’s wrong.”

The corners of her mouth twitched upwards in an understanding smile, but it never reached her eyes. His stomach did a somersault, and realization hit him with brutal force. She was angry. She wouldn’t make any compromises. It was all or nothing now.

“You’re getting cold feet,” she replied. “That’s normal. Give it time – you’ll get used to it again.”

He licked his lips. His hand came up to rub his neck – a nervous gesture he wasn’t able to control, not even whilst lying down.

“No, I… I don’t think I will. Listen, Sam---”

She cut him off, which he was almost thankful for, given that he didn’t really know what to tell her in the first place.

“Are you breaking up with me?”

Now that she had put it into words, it seemed quite obvious. Yes, he was. He had no idea how to get out of the mess he’d manoeuvred himself into, but he was sure that this was the first step. He’d probably known it all along.

“I’m so sorry,” he murmured.

“And then she asked me if it was because of you.”

He paused and watched House, who was sitting on the sofa, use the tip of his cane to stamp a pattern into the living-room carpet.

“I said yes,” he added softly and then turned around to look out of the window and wait.

“How did she react?” he asked.

House exhaled through his nose. The heat radiating off his body made Wilson’s skin tingle, even though they weren’t touching.

“She cried a bit.”

His friend sounded so tired and defeated that Wilson couldn’t help but wonder if they’d get through this without breaking. Maybe it was too late already?

“I’m sorry, House. I really am. For hurting them – and for hurting you. I fucked up big time.”

House shrugged.

“I didn’t think you’d come back so soon.”

House’s low grumble vibrated through the dark room and wound its way from Wilson’s ears directly into his heart. Why had he never noticed how much he loved this voice? He wanted to hear it every day.

“You knew I’d make this decision?” he asked.

He rolled onto his side to face the man beside him. The moonlight made House’s eyes glow and sparkle, but the rest of his face was obscured by shadows.

“Yes,” was his simple answer.

When their tongues met for the first time, something exploded inside of Wilson. House tasted so good, and his kiss was as soft as silk, framed by rough stubble that burned his lips in the most delicious way.
