She tapped her pen against the desk rhythmically while the teacher was instructing the class. Briar, trying to tune in to what the teacher was saying kept most of her focus on her.
The teacher paused talking to step out of the class for a moment, and the class started to chatter to those around them. Stella tapped her shoulder. "Briar. "
"Yes?" Briar replied cautiously, as she was afraid the teacher would come in at any moment and scold the class for being loud and disruptive.
"Been doing alright?"
"Yeah I'm fine. I've just been taking it easy. You know those jerks at the party put alcohol in our drinks?"
"Oh yeah. " Stella ground her teeth together while gripping the writing utensil in her hand tightly. "If I see them, they're dead."
Briar let out a insincere laugh. "What are you even going to do against them? No offence, but you aren't very intimidating. "She gestured towards her friend's lack of muscles or any sort of tough physique.
"'No offence'" Stella curled up her fingers to form air quotes. "Doesn't make the statement not offensive. " I heard that you spent the night at Luke's house," Stella changed the subject.
Briar wanted to ask a herd of questions concerning how did she know but settled on keeping calm and responding subtly by nodding her head and saying, "I fell asleep on his toilet. "
Stella's expression changed completely and covered her mouth when she laughed to prevent it from being too loud. "Seriously?"
"Yeah he must have saw me and decided to not wake me up-" Briar's eyes wandered to the entrance and saw her teacher about to come in. "We'll talk later. " She whispered. Stella silently agreed and turned in her chair to face forward. Briar did the same and went back to tapping her pencil on the desk.
The teacher began talking about a project that was coming up. It was a very simple one relating to the periodic table. They were to come up with something that demonstrates knowledge of the first 10 elements. Briar had already been thinking of creating a mnemonic device for the elements, and made a mental note of it.
Stella on the other hand, wasn't paying much attention to what their teacher and just wanted the class to be over so she could pry more answers out of Briar relating to what happened this weekend. Also she would be able to talk to her about what she went through with Michael.
The bell finally rang, answering Stella's silent prayers for the end of class to arrive. The two girls walked out together and headed to the lunchroom. Stella's stomach dropped when she realised that she wouldn't be able to ask Briar at lunch while the guys were there.
They made themselves comfortable at the table, Briar getting out her lunch and Stella having already gotten her school lunch out on the table. The guys haven't arrived yet so Stella quickly began to ask Briar questions. "Did anything happen with you and Luke?"
"He said that he still had feelings for me. " Briar replied casually before taking a bite out of her sandwich. Once she gulped it down, she continued speaking to not leave her friend hanging. "Before you even ask no we didn't do anything. We just talked and watched tv. I even told him about my mum. "
"Oh really?" Stella's voice went up a few octaves at the word really. "Huh. " She looked down and started messing with her food. I'm surprised you haven't already. " She devoured a spoonful of mashed potatoes.
"What do you mean by that?" Briar was confused.
"Nothing just you've known him a long time," Stella gulped down some bottled water. "Thought you would've told him by now. " She was very casual with her words not seeing anything wrong with questioning Briar. "You told me and he knew you longer. "
"Yeah but he's Luke. " Briar chuckled. "I haven't been very friendly with him that long, and yeah I told you but you are my friend. Why would I not tell you?"
"You have a point there. " That was clearly the end of the conversation as the boys came over and sat down at the table, Stella and Briar having to take their bags offer the seats and toss them on the floor.
Stella still not told Briar about catching a ride from Michael, but it wasn't about her. It was always about Briar and that was just how it was going to have to be. She sighed quietly before listening in on the table conversation.
