"It's okay, it's fine." The person replies. Her voice seems a little hoarse, almost as if she's used to screaming, or perhaps smoked at some point in her life. "I'm your nurse. My name is Mrs. Tellaro, but you can call me Jessica." I nod. "How are you feeling?" she asks.
"Well, other than not being able to see, I feel fine." I reply.
"You can't see?" she asks, her voice becoming mildly concerned with an obvious mother's care.
"Noooo... Why?" I take Daniel's hand in mine.
"Well..." She pauses, and I hear a few footsteps that seem to signal her starting to walk towards the door. "Let me go talk to your parents really quick. I'll be right back." I hear her footprints then run out of the room. After a little bit she comes back in, two other pairs of feet in tow. I'd assume they're my parents.
"Jessica?" I ask. "Mom? Dad?" I wave my arms around. "Where are you?"
I hear my mom sob.
"Oh baby!" She hugs me. Her smooth, silky hair falls around my shoulders in the dark, chestnut waves that reach her waist.
"Mom, what's going on? Why can't I see?" My fingers grab onto her delicate, birdlike shoulders.
My mom pulls back. "In the accident, you had jammed your hands into your eyes on accident, and, as Mrs. Tellaro explained to us, it may have impaired your vision. Forever." She lets that sink in, and I feel one of her tears land on my cheek.
"So... I'll be blind... Forever?" I ask, staring at the big wall of gray with hatred, fear, disgust. I can feel tears begin to water up in my eyes. These darned eyes that don't work anymore.
"Yes." Jessica whispers. I sob and reach out towards Daniel.
"Daniel!" I cry. He leans down and hugs me, gathering me up in his strong, capable arms. He strokes my waist length, golden blonde hair, comforting me beyond words.
"It's okay, baby." He says, rubbing my back. "It's okay. I'm here for you." I bury my face in his shoulder, wanting nothing more than to fall asleep and escape this for just a little while.
I hear the door open and someone else walk in. The footsteps sound heavy, so they can't be Jackster's... Who is this?
"Is she awake?" Another male voice asks. I'd assume this voice comes from the footsteps.
"Yes." Jessica replies.
"Good. Hello, Cosette. I'm Dr. Brown. I'm guessing by the way you're clinging to that young man, you have come to the conclusion that you're blind?" I nod and hear the doctor scribble something down. "You'll either have to go to a school for the blind or hire someone to help you learn at your school." He says to me, plain and simple. Because I'm not very confident in my ability to talk without sounding like a blubbering fool, I hold up two fingers in a way of saying that I want to go to school still.
"Honey," My dad starts, his voice gruff from years of use. "Are you sure you still want to go to regular school? It'll be a lot harder than going to a school for the blind."
My hands tangle up in Daniel's hair and I kiss his nose, my way of saying that Daniel is my reasoning.
At this moment, I can FEEL my dad's frown radiating from across the room. "Fine." He manages. Dad doesn't really like the fact that I have a boyfriend, but has come to terms with the fact that I'm not giving Daniel up.
Whatever. I just smile and hug Daniel closer.
