Chapter 4
My heart seems to stop.
"What?" I can't believe that I almost went to school not knowing this.
"I'm sorry we didn't let you know earlier, honey. We didn't want to scare you. We've been assured that Uncle Kevin will live, and that he is conscious and happy to be that way.
Someone sets something down in front of me. "It's cereal." My mom says. "Here's a spoon." She hands me a spoon and leads my hand to the dish.
"Thanks." I say. I eat three bites, then, not feeling up to struggling with a meal currently, get up from the table. Small feet pound into the room. "Jackster, can you find my backpack for me?" I ask.
"YUP!" He cries. I hear his feet run out of the room then scurry back. He opens my hands and plops my backpack into them. I smile and slip it on over my sweater, then find my way to the left side of the wall leading to my room. After this is the painstaking process of getting through my room to my bathroom. I find my toothbrush, brush my teeth, and throw on some lip gloss. I make my way back to my kitchen, and hear someone fall in step beside me.
"Ready for the first day of your Junior year?" A familiar voice asks. Let's see... Mom... No. It's male. Dad... No. Younger. Jackster... No. Older. Daniel. Yes. That's it.
"Hi Daniel." I say. "I don't know if I am. It's my first day at school without, you know, that little thing called vision that most people have."
"I'll guide you. I had my schedule remade to match yours. Plus, I had my locker moved to right beside yours." I smile, leaning into the arm that Daniel throws around my shoulders.
"You're so sweet, Daniel." I say, resting my head on his shoulder.
He chuckles. "Sweet is what I do." He leads me to the front door and I hear him open it before he leads me down the steps to what I know is his shiny, black BMW. He got it for his sixteenth birthday a year ago. He opens the side door for me and I slide in, so familiar with it that I don't need to see it to know where everything is. I feel the door close behind me and I buckle myself in.
I hear Daniel get in the other side and feel him start up the engine. He reaches his hand over and grabs my hand, a comforting feeling as he backs out of my driveway and we make our way to school in comfortable silence. He parks and helps me out, turning me to face the school and placing my arm on his arm. I take a deep breath in.
"Here goes nothing."
