A heavy silence encased us. The air was thick with fear and tension and a pin would definitely be heard if someone were to drop one. Nobody did anything, most likely hoping that what Dan had said was just some type of sick joke. But when Dan didn't say a word, the truth of reality sunk in.

"No that's not possible! How did they even know we'd try something like this?" exclaimed Ella breaking the silence. Like myself, she already knew the answer. Everything was too easy when we escaped, like they knew what we were going to do yet they didn't stop us.

Now I knew why.

The kidnappers had been testing us again and we fell for their trap anyway. The idea of escaping was just too good of an opportunity to miss and now we had cornered ourselves.

Dan obviously wasn't happy with our reaction. "Get to work!" he yelled urgently. "Think of a way to get out, don't just stand there! We're so close, we can't give up yet, not when our freedom's on the line!" Apparently he thought we still had a chance of escape.

We did nothing. At the moment you could probably mistake us for a bunch of statues with the way we're acting. Well, except for Dan. I'm pretty sure by doing nothing, we made him angrier than what he already was. Then again I probably would be to if I had been held captive for most of my life and then when I finally do get a chance to escape everyone just freezes after hearing that they had been set up, leaving me to fend for myself.

"Fine! Stay here then, see if I care!" yelled Dan, beyond furious. "I'll just do it myself." He then turned to face the steel door he had just entered through and smashed through the code panel, automatically pressing (what seemed to me) random buttons, presumably to change the code for the door. Either that or he was going to blow the place up.

I was just praying that Dan was changing the code to prolong the inevitable and give us a chance to get out of this dilemma.

While he was working, he must have pressed a wrong button as a small beep was heard, signalling a mistake. That and Dan cursing himself under his breath for making such an error in a life or death situation.
