Everyone was busy with the preparations for the upcoming party to celebrate

People were scattered everywhere, making sure any last minute changes were done before nightfall. During this time, my siblings and I were playing in the games room oblivious to the major event happening tonight.

That was, at least, until father came into the room, silencing our laughter and immediately my siblings and I looked straight at him.

"Hello children, how are you this afternoon?"

Something was off. Dad barely ever came to say hello to us, especially during the last few months as he had been really busy with tons of work.

We greeted him and then went back to the silent approach. After a short moment of awkward silence before our father spoke again.

"Daniel, may I have a word with you outside," and then added as an afterthought, "alone." Then he strode back outside the door. Dan quickly glanced at us, most likely wondering the same thing, why on earth would our father want to speak to him?

It was no secret that in our family, I was dad's favourite. Dan and Millie were closer to mum than I was which was fine by me. It meant I didn't have to share our father with my siblings.

Everything was silent as Daniel left the room, neither Millie nor I quite knew what to do without our big brother with us. After a few minutes of us failing to eavesdrop outside of the door, we started to hear daddy's voice sternly speaking and then our older brothers' cries of protest. Then silence again, signalling that the conversation was over and dad had left.

By then Millie and I had seated ourselves back on the comfortable chairs, awaiting our brother so that he could tell us what had happened.

We weren't so sure we wanted to hear though, after we took in Dan's facial expressions. He looked really upset. It was sort of the same expression he had when I 'borrowed' his favourite toy and accidently broke it beyond repair...only at the moment he looked a lot worse.

"Mum and dad are having a party tonight and we have to go," he started. I was about to say something but was cut off when he continued. "It's a celebration. Dad is officially announcing that when I turn of age I inherit the company."

"Oh." Was the only thing I could say. Even though I was only 4, I still understood the weight those words held.

I knew how much Dan hated the fact that his life was being planned out for him. The only thing he had ever wanted was freedom and that was also the only thing he would probably never get.

Without warning, the door burst open and in came mummy with a bunch of maids.

"Come on kids, we have to get you ready for tonight. Lots of important people are going to be coming and you all have to look your best for the occasion."

Hours had most likely past and my patience was starting to run out. I had been pricked by too many pins to count, just for some piece of clothing that I would only ever wear once (maybe twice) in my life.

Although I had to admit that the maids worked like mad men or should I say mad women. They had been sewing clothes and preparing everything and I was amazed that no one had collapsed from exhaustion yet.

Eventually, we were told to go downstairs to the party where we basically stood around with our parents until our father, the host, stepped up onto the stage.

"Good evening all and welcome to this very important and special event. I'm pleased to see many familiar faces in the crowd along with my new working colleagues. Now before you get comfortable and the food comes out I would just like to announce some very exiting news. My first son, Daniel Lucas Blackwood, will officially take over my company on his 19th birthday, which I believe to be a suitable age for him to take over. Unless some major event occurs or I find that he is unfit to take over, he WILL continue our family business. Now enjoy the meal!"

With that said, my family walks over to the head table where we are seated and then we started eating.

Little did any of us know that the kidnapping would occur later within the next year. With the devastating loss of my older brother and a concussion, Dan ceased to exist in the family as I had forgotten, Mille was too young to remember and mum and dad could never bring themselves to talk about it.

On my 6th birthday, dad said I would take over the business and after that, I was given more security to guard me and I had little to no freedom.

No one expected me to get kidnapped as well. Especially by the doctor, who was thought to be my closest and most trusted guardian.
