Chapter 8

Lucian looked dumbfounded. He was expecting to hear that our plan was to take Jax back. He stopped walking and began stuttering for a few seconds. He turned away from me once more and placed his head in his right hand while his left rested on his hip.

"Mavis, do you realize how stupid that is? Ross will kill you and Ragnar. He won't hesitate. Mavis, please trust me. I do want Jax back as well but it isn't possible. I'm sorry."

"Just take me back, Lucian. Just take me back. I don't have to listen to this. I know exactly what Ross is capable of. I've heard the stories but that is exactly why I have to get Jax back. He can't be allowed to raise our son." Lucian seemed to think for a moment before looking me in the eye. I couldn't place the look in his, it wasn't explainable and I've never seen it before.

"I agree with you, Mavis. I do but it can't be done. Although, I'll let you try and if you succeed, you raise him, both of you. Let Ragnar be the father I couldn't be."

Lucian did as he had promised and returned me to Ragnar and the guys. He found where they were staying and walked me up to the van. I saw Ragnar and I ran to him.

"Mavis?" He was shocked as I jumped into his arms and kissed him with everything I had. I put all my love for him in that kiss. He suddenly let go and pushed me behind him, guarding me from Lucian.

"Ragnar, wait. He brought me back. He took me but he brought me back. Just hear him out, please." Ragnar looked back at me, confused and shocked that I would ever defend Lucian.

"You're...you can't be serious, Mavis. He's one of the reasons we're in this mess. He can't be trusted."

"You think I trust him? After everything he's done, you think I trust him? Hell, no but just listen." Richard came out of the van then and saw Lucian, he suddenly looked panicked.

"How in the loop are you?" I asked him. He didn't take his eyes off of Lucian to look at me.

"Mavis, I'm only told when their moving and where. I am never told anything else. I swear." He still didn't look at me. I tried to get him to look at me but he wouldn't. He seemed to be afraid of Lucian.

"Brother, please listen. I..."

"Don't you dare, Lucian. Don't you dare call me brother. You are not my brother, not anymore. Not after everything you've done. Lucian, you killed my wife, you separated my kids, and turned me into a horrible creature and you think that you can just waltz right up to me and call me brother. I don't think so. I don't know what you're trying to do here but it ends now, leave." I've never seen Ragnar so angry before. He was literally shaking with fury right in front of me and I couldn't even recognize my husband.

Lucian didn't speak as he looked to all of us, trying to get one of us to just listen but Ragnar had a point. He burned so many bridges that no one trusted him, not one of us wanted to give him the time of day because he is a monster.

"Ragnar please just hear me out. Okay? I am just as out of the loop as you. When Ross told me to get Jax away from you, I thought at least I got to be a part of his life but I haven't seen my son since that day by the lake. I understand your hesitation, I understand your anger but Ragnar, I am not the monster that I was. I am not that guy anymore, I don't know if it has something to do with Alex killing me or if it was Jax himself but something inside of me changed and I can't explain it.

"But I do know this, Ross will kill you on sight. You won't even know he is coming until one or all of you is dead, you can't do this. Just let Jax go. I couldn't get through to Mavis but maybe I can you, go home and just have your family with her and let Jax go." I was shocked. I thought that Lucian was actually going to let us get to Jax but he was just trying to see if Ragnar could see reason. I just looked to Alex and Richard but they weren't looking at me, afraid to take their eyes off Lucian.
