"You saw Onyx's parents?" Song questioned. "That's great news, he would be so happy."
"I don't know about all of that." Kai replied.
"What do you mean?"
"Song, I think the Shadows got them."
When those words fell from Kai's lips, Song was thrown into a state of disbelief. It almost seemed impossible. The Shadows are a dangerous threat, to the common people it's one thing, but for a Shadowhunter to be infected, it's a whole different ball game, especially SSS hunters. "That's awful," was the only thing she could say. Song reflected on the time, when she was consumed by the Shadows. It felt like she wasn't herself, as if someone else came in and took over. "Have you told Free?"
"Not yet," he replied.
"Then let's go to her house."
The pair jogged through a few alleyways and minutes later arrived at Free's house. Song grabbed the spare key and opened the door.
"So that's where the spare went." Kai muttered.
"Yeah, cause you don't need it." Song quickly replied.
"Um- well, I didn't say that I did," he smirked.
Free walked in the living room. "Hey guys, go to see you back," she said cheerfully.
"Got some bad news," Kai stated.
Free jumped back, "Are one of you infected?"
"No, but someone else is," Song replied. She was met with silence, before she continued to say, "The Guardians are."
"What?" Free squealed.
"It's the truth, I saw Onyx's parents yesterday when I was taking a shortcut through one of the alleys. They were passed out. I walked over to them and was shocked to see it was them. Their amulets were ashy, so I knew they were consumed. I was going to drag them to a shelter, but remembered no one would take them because they are outlaws. When they began to stir, I left." Kai explained.
"Kai, you left them in an alley!" Free was shocked.
"Um, yeah!"
"That was probably the best maneuver. Like Kai said, no shelter will take them, so other than one of our homes, there is nowhere for them to go. Even being at our houses is dangerous for us." Song reflected.
"What are we going to do?" Free asked.
"Say nothing," Song replied. "Onyx cannot know, not right now, that would hurt him so much. Timing is everything. As for us, we are the only three that know. Our prime concentration needs to be on, learning more on the Master Light Elements, to see if we can potentially do a mind war of them, without someone getting hurt."
"Agreed." Kai and Free said in unison.
Song nodded to them before leaving. As she headed home, she saw Zuri coming to her door.
"Hey. Song," she smiled.
"Hi, Zuri, were you coming over?"
"If you don't mind."
"No, it's fine come on in." Song replied as she opened the door. Zuri stayed outside. Song turned and saw that she was taking steps backward. "What's wrong?"
"Song, where's your amulet?"
"Oh," Song remembered before pulling it out of her pants pocket. "As orange as ever."
Zuri sighed in relief before coming inside.
Song was a little surprised, she thought that Zuri was a SSS member, she should have known how to handle a situation where a person did not have an amulet.
"I know you're probably wondering about me. Coming from the SSS and being worried about your amulet. It's just because I'm not a Shadowhunter." Zuri explained.
"What? I thought everyone at the SSS were Shadowhunters."
"Well the name is Secret Society of Shadowhunters, so I don't blame you. But I was on the research team, when it comes to going out hunting, I'm on an amateur level."
"Interesting," Song replied. "So is there anything you wanted to talk to me about?"
"Yes, I wanted to offer you an amulet."
"How do you know about that?" Song was clearly perplexed.
"Well, Creed came by Onyx's house and I overheard him asking Onyx if he could run to the SSS to retrieve his parent's amulets. He explained that he wanted to use his parents because you were going to use your mother's. I just want you to know that, I know that I'm not a Shadowhunter, but I want to help the cause in whatever way possible. My older sister, was a real Shadowhunter, she lost her soul and passed away a year ago. If you need another amulet, you can use hers." Zuri explained.
Song was so touched by Zuri's offer. She looked her in the eyes and replied, "Thank you. I will talk to Creed to see if we need another one. What was your sister's name?"
"Nyla," Zuri whispered.
"Well, we will be forever grateful to her."
"I see why people like you so much," Zuri smiled.
"Huh?"
"I don't know what it is, but you have this light about you. You have a wonderful personality, fiercely strong, but fiercely beautiful." Zuri said as she waved and walked out of the door.
That made Song recall what her father said about her mother bringing light and peace to him. As she closed the door she smiled as tears pulled at the corner of her eyes, I hope you'd be proud of me mom. She reflected on Zuri's words, 'fiercely strong, but fiercely beautiful'. I will live up to those words, if it's the last thing that I do.
