Brooke's POV

"Brooke?" Ashton nudges me

"Hmm?"

He sighs and looks at me hard. "You're not into this, are you?"

I look at my food. "No no this is great. I really like the food."

"That's not what I meant..."

"What?"

"Something's changed. You're into me anymore and I can tell." He says

"Ashton..." I bite my lip

"What's going on?" He asks

"N-nothing." I stutter

He scoffs. "Just tell me Brooke."

"It's nothing." I look away

He gets up and shakes his head. "Ashton!"

"I don't want to do this anymore." He says

"You don't mean that." I chase after him

He turns around. "Something is not right, okay? You're not- you're not the same. You're distant and I feel like you don't feel the way I do. I love you, Brooke."

"I lo-"

"No, you don't." He whispers

"I don't want it to end like this." I cry

He forces a smile. "We need a break, Brooke."

"What..." I cross my arms

"A break." He repeats

Soon, tears begin rushing down my face. He holds me. "I'm sorry." I apologize

He laughs. "You didn't do anything wrong."

If only you knew...

"It's just a break. I promise." He says

But it's not just a break. I know that when he's ready to get back together, I won't be. I don't think I'll ever be. Ashton's great he really is, but he's not the guy for me. Luke is.

"Let me get you home." He says

I nod as he guides me to the car. He opens the door for me and I slide into the passengers seat.

The ride was silent. I lean my head against the window and try my hardest not to cry. When we finally reach my boring, grey house, he pulls into my driveway and parks.

"So when you say 'break' you mean-"

Ashton I interrupts. "Space. We both need space."

"Ashton, I don't need space." I say

"I do..." He says softly

"You need space from me?"

He nods. "Brooke, I can't help but feel like, like you..."

"Like I what?"

He shakes his head. "Never mind."

"No, tell me."

"It's late Brooke. You should probably head inside." He cocks his head to the side

"Fine." I say and get out

"Brooke!" He shouts

"What?" I ask

"Goodnight." He says before driving off

I sit down on my porch and watch the two red lights disappear as he drives farther and farther. I then turn my head a little and see Luke.

"Hey stranger." He grins

I smile a bit. "Hey, Luke."

He frowns. "What's the matter?"

"Um, Ashton and I are taking a break." I stand up

"Brooke, I'm sorry. What happened?"

"I don't know."

"Are you alright?"

"I'm okay that we're taking a break. This whole relationship has been...weird lately. But, I'm not okay with the fact that it's my fault."

"It's not your fault Brooke." Luke says

"Yeah it is. Ashton's so amazing and in the beginning our relationship was...amazing, but now I think that after this 'break' or whatever is done and he wants to get back together, I won't." I look at Luke

"That's okay, Brooke."

"I don't want to hurt him, Luke." I say

"If you're not happy, then you shouldn't keep holding onto this relationship. He'll understand." Luke says

"Will he?"

"Yeah." He smiles

"Brooke?! Is that you? Come inside honey!" My mother yells

I sigh. "I should go."

"Night." I add

"Night, B." He shoves his hands in his pockets and walks across the street.
