"Where have you two been all day" Andrew asks as we walk into the arena, our faces pink from the icy wind, my hair slightly damp from the snow and the cold. I laugh tugging off my hat and gloves, as Shawn unwraps his scarf from around his neck. Andrew gives us the same look he did the other day on the elevator, the one that says, something is going on here.
"I took her skating because we needed a break we had been practicing nonstop for the past few days." Shawn answers.
"Well if you really have been practicing then lets see how you sound." Andrew says gesturing for us to follow him. We walk around back stage, past a bunch of boxes, microphones, instruments and wires. He leads us onto the stage, that is still being set up for tomorrow night and hands us each a mic, and calls for a piano to be brought out for Shawn. "Ok, I want to hear Hayden first, then the duet, then Shawn I want to hear your new song then we'll run through the whole show." Andrew says talking quickly as he walks off the stage and goes to sit in the front row of seats. "Hayden, take it away my dear".
I swallow hard, and look at Shawn who is standing in the wings waiting to come out for the last verse. Then I look at Andrew and all the crew members sitting on the ground right in front of the stage waiting for me to sing, so I take a deep breath, wait a few chords, and open my mouth. After the second verse I get lost in the song, as I usually do, and forget about everything that was going through my mind prior to this moment. I know this is only sound check but it still feels crazy amazing singing up here on this stage. Like nothing else matters, its just me and the music.
"Our love is just a fantasy living in my mind. But I keep it there because its better than reality, boy our love is just a fantasy." I sing the last line of the song, as Shawn walks out onto the stage strumming the final chords on his guitar. When it's finished I breathe in through my nose and close my eyes as I feel Shawn's strong arms wrap around me in a hug.
"Hayden, that was perfect" he whispers in my ear, before walking to the end of the stage, as we take our positions to sing the duet. It is a Stitches and I Know What You did Last Summer mashup, and I am beyond excited for it, I am also a little a nervous for it because, well, I'm no Camilla Cabello. Shawn has told me not to worry, and I roll my eyes at him every time, because who wouldn't worry at a time like this, in a situation like this. Those are some huge shoes to fill and I've heard that she is going to be at the show to see me preform her part, as if things weren't bad enough. Still, despite my nerves when my part comes, I open my mouth and sing my heart out, and as Shawn and I belt out the last line, I look out in front of the stage at Andrew who looks very happy, I know we have done well.
Shawn and I go through the rest of the show without a problem, I sing my solo, he comes out and thanks me then I'm off for four songs, then back on for the duet, then off for the remaining five. The show is a total of ten songs long, eleven if you count my solo at the beginning, the whole thing takes about two and a half hours to complete, then we get an hour break and Andrew makes us do it all over again, we have to get this perfect, we just have to. I'm still a bit scared about the show, the solo thing is a surprise last minute touch, its not even on the set list that fans have posted all over twitter some how. The duet is though, which makes me think that Shawn had been planning this whole thing for longer that he said he was.
At about midnight Andrew, looks at his phone, takes a long sip of his water and then announces, "That's a wrap, you two are definitely ready for tomorrow, I'm looking forward to it. You are free to go, big, big night tomorrow." then he walks off, saying things people as he passes by them no longer acknowledging our presence.
I collapse into Shawn's lap on the couch back stage in the green room and close my eyes with a sigh. One hand plays with my hair while the other scrolls through Instagram on his phone. I hear him chuckle at a few videos as he scrolls past them and I smile snuggling into him more. After a while I decide to let sleep over take me and I close my eyes.
