"Alright, I think I finally figured it out." Monty and I sat across from Lloyd Jefferies; he was well-known in the black market as a certified head doctor. Not only that, he practiced medicine. In all reality, there's a cure for almost anything; the government just chooses to keep that shit a secret for profit reasons.
I had been holding back a lot of information about Nyree and her situation. It's been almost a year since the whole Jourdin fiasco, and 'old boy finally got his new drug to work.
"Your friend Nyree is suffering from what we call Dissociative Amnesia. After experiencing a traumatic experience, the brain tends to block out that specific memory as a defense mechanism."
"So you sayin' that 'Ree's mind just magically made her forget? So what, we just wait for her to remember on her own?" Monty chimed in.
"I'm afraid the details aren't exactly that simple. You see with this type of disorder, it goes beyond the usual memory loss 'causing enormous gaps in the timeframe, whether it be short or long term."
I already knew everything he was telling us, but since this was Monty's first time coming with me, I let Lloyd fill him in. I still wanted to know what the hell they found in her system. Last year when 'Ree moved in with me, naturally she went to get checked out.
Everything came back clean except for just one thing, and I couldn't bring myself to bring it up to her until I knew what the hell it was. I tossed the file the hospital had given me with 'Ree's records onto his lap. "So what the fuck is this?"
He adjusted his glasses as he skimmed over the papers. He looked back at me with a curious expression. "It says here that they found traces of scopolamine in her system." Both me and Monty looked at him dumbfounded.
Lloyd rubbed the back of his head nervously as I waited to for him to finally speak. "The generic name for the drug is Scopolamine, but it's known in the streets as 'The Devil's Breath'. It's derived from the flowers of a tree in Columbia."
"Columbia? So what the hell was it doin inside of 'Ree when she's never been there?" For all I know, she could've and just never realized. After all, according to Lloyd her brain was keeping her from accessing those memories.
"They call it the 'Borrachero' tree which translates to 'get you drunk'. When inhaled or ingested, you go into a zombie like state. You have entirely no free will, and will be convinced to do whatever the perpetrator asks. Once the drug wears off, the victim will have no recollection of the recent events that just occured; it's the perfect drug for most criminals."
