Nyree
I walked in and sat quietly, holding Lacey in my lap. Jourdin pulled up a chair next to us and sat with his hands in his lap. "Courtney, this is Jourdin, Jo this is Courtney", I mumbled. They silently shook hands and nodded. "Hi", Lacey exclaimed, waving at Courtney. For some reason, my daughter took a liking to Courtney, which really didn't surprise me at all the more I thought about it. Lacey was so open and friendly when it came to male adults; women were a whole different story.
I watched as Lacey played with him for 20 full minutes before I finally spoke up. This whole ordeal was awkward enough; it was time to get this shit over with. "Baby, can you take Lacey and go and get us some snacks please?". "Alright munchkin, let's go", Jourdin grabbed our daughter's hand and left silently, glad to get a break from the obvious tension in the room. My gaze went back to Courtney. "Alright, cut the bullshit, what do you need to tell me now?".
Courtney reached for my hand and I quickly snatched it away. "Talk dammit", I demanded. I didn't have time for all of the bullshit mind games he was trying to play. "I'm dying, Nyree". I stared back at him as if he had just slapped me across the face. I exhaled and held my breath for a minute before finally inhaling as he told me the story."Nyree, I'm not asking for you to admit that you love me, I already know that you do. I'm asking you to talk to Jacey. I know I can't have you, but if I could choose anybody in this world for you to be with, I would choose him. I know you still love him and it's okay, and if Jourdin loved you he would understand. Please, just talk to him. I mean really talk to him", he expressed. I laughed and shook my head. "You've gotta be dying; you've lost your fucking mind already". Courtney laughed, "You know we can never lie when we talk; even you Nyree. Just talk to him, prove me wrong if that's how you feel", he challenged. "Man I ain't got time for this bullshit", I muttered before gathering my things and walking out.
...
I took a long stretch as I hopped out of the car. It was 8 in the morning and Lacey and I were up to drop Jourdin off at the airport. He had already taken too many days off and it was time to get back to work. He kept insisting that he could take Lacey if I wanted him to, but there was no need; she would be a distraction to him on the days that he worked from home. I didn't mind keeping her. I needed to spend some more quality time since I'd been spending a little extra time at work; I needed to catch up on what goes on in the careless world she calls life.
As we arrived at the terminal, Jourdin turned to face us for his goodbye kisses. Lacey handed him a bear along with a hug and kiss. "Can you watch him for me?". Jourdin smiled down at her and nodded. I cocked an eyebrow and smirked. "It's one of the toys she got at the toy store, for some reason she's really attached to it, she even named it after this guy we met at the store" Jourdin explained. "I see. And what's this guy like?" Jourdin shrugged, "He seemed pretty cool, I didn't talk to him long. But he wanted me to tell you that Lacey is a beautiful name". I winked, "I told you; I know what I'm talking about". Jourdin waved me off and kissed me goodbye.
