"ANN! THERE'S SOMEONE AT THE DOOR FOR YOU!" Josh yells at me. I jump out of the bed almost breaking my laptop. I scamper down the stairs and see the person I've missed so much since coming here.
"SYDNEY!" I scream and we both slam run to each other with a squeal. Josh laughs and blocks his ears.
" Ann! I can't believe it's been four months since I've seen you. I've missed you so much! Nathan does too." Sydney says.
"Did you guys break up?" I ask. She frowns.
"Yes. We both wanted it. We're still friends though. Nothing awkward at all." Sydney blurts out. Suddenly I hear someone clear their throat.
"Oh. Sydney. Josh. Josh. Sydney." I mumble pointing to each person.
"Hello." Josh says shaking her hand.
She seems pretty cool with him. I know she wouldn't want to embarrass herself. I grab Sydney and pull her upstairs to a guest room. She sets down her bags and sits down. I hear her sigh.
"Sooooo.. what is going on with you and Josh?" She questions. I think about for a moment. Do I even have an answer for that question?
"I really have no idea. We're just friends right now." I whisper. She just smirks and looks at me like I know something she doesn't.
"Um. I got to go!" I say before I run down the hallway trying to avoid the topic.
"I will get an answer out of you Annie!" Sydney as I walk downstairs. When I reach the kitchen I see Josh typing on his phone. He looks up and smiles at me. The smile that makes my heart melt.
"Hello Anniebell." Josh says. I look at him confused.
"So is that my new nickname?" I say laughing. He just nods. "What's up?"
"Nothing. I have friends coming over for a small get together at seven." Josh explains.
"Oh. Cool. I better get ready then. I'll tell Sydney too." I yell while walking back upstairs. I quickly tell her to get ready then go to get ready myself.
I decide on some jean high waisted shorts and a flowy polka dot top. While putting my hair in a bun I run to Sydney's room. She has a skirt and tank top on. Just when I'm about to say something the doorbell rings. I hear Josh scream that he's got it as I pull Sydney out the door.
Everyone of his friends are extremely nice. I talk to each person about their life, my life, common interest, etc. At ten, I hear someone scream that it's time to play truth or dare. Everyone sits in a circle and we begin. The usual things happen. Jump in the pool with you clothes on, someone saying. They liked another person, and secrets come out that no one ever knew about a person. Then, it comes to Josh's turn.
"Truth or dare?" His friend asks.
"Dare."
"Okay.... I dare you to.... kiss Sydney." I hear. The words poke at me like a needle. Sharp and painful. Josh blushes and follows through. I can tell Sydney's not all too comfortable with it but she does it anyway.
Carefully, I grab some plates off the table and bring them to the kitchen after the date is done. I need to calm down and collect myself. Sydney comes in a bit later.
"Are you okay? I feel awful. I don't even really like him. I was a stupid dare. it doesn't mean a thing." She blurts out on one breath.
"I'm fine. What are you talking about? Josh and I aren't together. He can kiss whenever and whoever he wants." I say while scrubbing the dishes hard. She looks at me in a way that I know she doesn't believe me.
"Ann. I've known you for a very long time. I can tell when your feeling something. Right now it's love. Your in love with Josh." She whispers. I think for a second. They I turn to her with a plate in my hands.
"I AM NOT. WHY DOES EVERYBODY KEEP TELLING ME THAT!" I yell as the watery plate slips through my hand and shatters on the ground. I cover my mouth with my hands.
Josh comes running in.
"What happened!" He exclaims as I look at Sydney. "Ann. What's wrong with you?"
I look from Josh to Sydney. I see they both have they look that they are waiting for me to answer. I don't know what to do.
"IM JUST REALLY CONFUSED. OKAY?" I yell running our of the house to the backyard. I grab a bike and ride it two miles to the beach. No ones there.
I need to think. I need to think about what I want, what I had, and what I need.
I run to the water and they it run over my feet over and over.
For a minute, I can almost feel as though my world isn't so confusing for once.
