Chapter 1

10 years later

Blood. I needed it so much. Craved it so much.
Surely just one taste couldn’t hurt,’ I thought, licking my lips as a delectable blonde sauntered past me. She turned back and winked at me before carrying on, exaggerating the sway of her hips. All I really wanted was the delicious blood that lurked within her veins, that precious liquid that flowed beneath the surface. I couldn’t care less about her perfect blonde hair that shone in the moonlight, or her obviously fake boobs.

My body moved as if to get up and follow. When I realized what was happening, I forced myself back onto the park bench.
No! You would lose control. End up draining her. You can’t have another innocent on your conscience! She hasn't done anything wrong!

My muscles ached from the effort of not following her. From not stealing that beloved blood from her weak little body.

Why had I come here? I should have known the temptation would be too much. Starving myself only worked for so long. If I went to long without blood, the blackouts would kick in. I’d wake to find three or four massacred corpses strewn around me, their blood on my lips, in my stomach. Blood that I usually ended up vomiting.

You know why you’re here. Killing one is better than killing three of four. And who knows, maybe you’ll actually find the will to stop this time…’ Yet I knew that was wishful thinking. Once the blood touched my tongue, I couldn’t stop until my victim was drained dry.

But I knew that I had to pick someone. That just made it worse. Who was I to choose who got to live and die? Because that was what I was doing. I knew that whomever I chose would lose their life this night.

I tried to make it better. Tried to only prey on those who deserved to die, like criminals. But my conscience wouldn’t have it. I wasn’t a born killer, but it was what I had become.

My blue eyes easily cut through the inky darkness of the park. I could make out the children's play frame in the centre. Could make out the tall trees surrounding the clearing I was currently in. I could even make out the squirrel that was perched on the tree in the shadowy depths of those tall trees, watching me with beady black eyes.

Although it was only around 9, the sun had already retreated back in a show of subservience to the moon. Few people walked Norfolk’s streets. Those that did constantly cast anxious glances around them, as if they sensed the eyes of a killer on them.

'Just pick someone already!' my body screamed. The pangs of hunger gnawed at me, a living entity, clawing at my stomach and throat. I knew that I wouldn't be able to wait much longer without losing it. Their blood was singing its sweet tune, and I was helpless not to be entranced. My eyes flickered their tell-tale green before changing back to their original blue as a man in saggy trousers and a baseball hat strolled past me. I inhaled deeply, breathing in the smell of cheap aftershave and that warm, delicious smell that was all human.

That scent was all it took for me to lose control. In a blur of speed that no human eye could track, I barrelled into the man from behind before speeding off with him to the cover of the trees, carrying him like he was a sack of potatoes while the man just yelped slightly in shock.
