We arrive at our destination and I see a teal and purple sign that’s lighting up. It says, “The Comet Café” and has a rabbit standing up next to the title. We walk in and seat ourselves in a small booth.
The whole restaurant is very… eclectic. There’s many hats and shirts and clothes alike hung up on the walls, along with random signs, posters, and sculptures. There is very dim lighting over the whole café and some of the customers have brought their laptops or tablets, lighting up the immediate area, but nothing else. There are quite a lot of people here, most of them at the bar. The bar situated in the back is very “diner style”. The platform it is on has black and white checkered tiles. And you can sit on red leather bar stools. There is another platform with just wood flooring in the middle back of the place. It has speakers and two young men, not much older than us, setting up instruments and other equipment.
“This place is pretty rad,” Lucy says and takes off her leather jacket she seems to love so dearly. I take off my own lavender fleece. Katie and April nod in agreement as they look over the café like I am.
“It’s awesome,” I squeal. God, I’m turning into April. But I really do love this place.
“I hope the food is good,” Katie says. “I’m starving.” You can’t deny that Katie loves food. It’s an undying, unrequited, unforgiving love. I think if you could marry food, Katie would totally do it. Because of this love, Katie is much curvier than all of us combined. She doesn’t mind it. But, I think it’s only because guys at school love it.
I see, out of the corner of my eye, April taking out her phone and turning it on. She looks hopeful. She’s probably wishing Logan texted her back, I think. Her screen illuminates her face and almost instantly drops. I’m guessing she didn’t get a call or text for him.
What an ass. Why did he do this to her? He always seemed so nice.
She looks up again and sees me looking at her. Katie and Luce are in their own conversation about whatever, so I give her a look that says, “Anything?” even though I think I know the answer. She smiles sadly and shakes her head. God, what was this guy’s problem?! He’s so lucky to have someone like April.
I give her my best “sorry” face and return to listening to Kate and Luce talk. It seems they are talking about Chad Thomas, one of the hottest guys in all of Meadow Hills High.
“But, I thought he was going out with Madison again?” Katie asks, her head in her hands. Madison and Chad have been on off since freshman year, I’m pretty sure. They have always been the number 1 source of drama in our school.
“You know, I hear she went to Robert’s party and started making out with the whole soccer team.” Lucy says, peaking my interest. I always thought Madison was a bit of a slut. She always wore skimpy outfits that showed way too much cleavage and the shortest shorts ever in the summer. I didn’t get why she got Chad who was probably the nicest guy ever. He wasn’t your stereotypical football captain. He cared about the school and was always polite whenever he talked to me or my friends. He was kind of a catch. “Peter told me this because he went to the party, even though he never goes to those things. He thinks they’re overrated.”
“Oh, you heard this from little Petey, did you?” April teased. Lucy and Peter are neighbors and have been for a really long time. We think they both have a crush on each other but neither of them admits it.
“He’s not little,” Lucy huffs. He is though. He’s probably only 5’4 and Lace is only 5’3. Their heights are perfect for each other. I’m 5’5, only bit taller than Peter. “And don’t say it like that. Peter and I are just friends, nothing more.”
Our table erupts with a chorus of, “Yeah right”s, “Of course not”s and “You like him”s. Luce’s cheeks turn a pale pink and we’re all laughing. And then a young man, maybe a year older than us, comes to our table.
He has dark brown hair, which, if it wasn’t for the light right above our booth, would look black. It’s longer, getting into his eyes. He’s quite tall, too, towering over the booth. He’s also wearing a black apron over his waist and a simple white shirt on top. In one word, he is hot. Like hotter than Chad, and that’s saying a lot.
He speaks up. “Hey, ladies, I’m Alex and I’ll be your server today. Here are your menus.” His long muscled arm reaches over to give me my menu and does the same to the other girls. They all smile while I clench my jaw, stopping it from dropping because he is so gorgeous and his voice is so deep and his upper body seems so muscular. “Can I get you something to drink?” His voice pops me out of my daze.
“Oh, um,” I scour the menu, looking for something I would drink. “I’ll just have a lemonade, I guess.”
“A lemonade, alright,” He replies. He takes the other girls drink orders, but I’m not listening. I’m looking- no staring- at this perfect boy only about a few feet away from me. I must look like I’m crazy. “Okay, I’ll be back with your drinks and give you some time to choose what you want to eat.” He says and makes eye contact with me for a split second before going back behind the bar.
“Holy shit,” Luce says, grabbing the collar of her tank-top, faking that she was warm. “Is it just me or was he hot?”
