I knock on the wooden door. There's no response, but I can hear screaming and feet running around. Typical. I decide to just walk into Lucy's house. I'm pretty sure I'd be stuck there all day, if I didn't. Fortunately the door is open.
I see Roberto, Lucy's dad, at the counter with his two youngest daughters.
"...talked about this before," He's saying before he hears me walk in. "Julia! ¿Qué tal?"
"Bien." I reply. I took Spanish in freshman year, so I know the basics. Plus, I've known Lucy for a long while.
"Eso es bueno. Lucy is upstairs." Then he turns back to his kids. "Mis ángeles, en qué estabas pensando?"
I trudge up the stairs and into Lucy's room. She originally shared it with her older sister, Daniella, but she's off at college. I hear chattering voices before I step in.
"Hey, you made it!" A very dolled up Katie announces my entrance. I notice Lucy's very dressed up as well, wearing a miniskirt and ripped up t-shirt. Kate's wearing a simple flower-printed dress, but when she stands, I see the strappy wedges she's wearing.
"Why doesn't anyone tell me when we dress up?" I complain, flopping down on Lucy's unmade bed.
"It's party, chica. Don't you want to look hot for Alex?" She winks. I groan. It's only been a few days since I told them about the possible... thing I have for Alex, but they will not stop teasing me about it.
"Just text April or something," Kate suggests. "She said she's be coming late, so ask her to bring you something."
I do exactly that as Katie continues talking. "So, I told Luce already, but I'll tell you and April too. Hunter and I held hands yesterday."
I immediately sit up. "Like, 'let me help you across the street' or 'I like how your hand fits in mine'"?
"The second one," She blushes. I run off the bed over to her sitting in Lucy's desk chair.
"No freaking way!" I squeal, hugging her. "Tell me every single detail!"
"He asked me out for smoothies and I had nothing better to do so I went. And we were kinda just talking and joking when he took my hand and started playing with it until held it and left it there." She sighs. "He's so cute."
"You'd be a good couple," I say to the beaming Katie.
"Not as good as Jules and Alex!" Lucy says, running down the hall to, presumably, the bathroom. I groan again.
"Anyways, how do you feel about holding hands with hot drummer Hunter?" I ask Katie. I don't want to be all about Alex all the time. I care about what's going on in my friends' lives, too.
"I don't know, to be honest," Katie bites her nails. "He's really sweet and all, with those odd t-shirts he always wears, but I don't think I know him that well."
"Hey, he's gonna be at the party tonight, right?" Kate quickly nods. "Get to know him then!"
Lucy comes in again. "Okay, I managed to steal the curler from Macy. Who wants to look fabulous?!"
They spend the next half hour applying weird creams to my face, burning the back of my neck and head with the curling wand, and putting fake lashes on. The lashes took the longest. Those things are really tricky.
Soon enough, April comes in with a hanger. She's already completely gorgeous with a knee-length pale pink dress with a bow at the waist. Her long blonde hair is straightened and laying on her back.
"Hello girlies," She coos. "Julia, I have your attire for the evening." She puts the dress on the bed. It's a light teal color with a flared skirt. What I don't like about it is the slits directly on my rib cage.
