"Yes!" I manage to say. I'm fanning my face, playing along with Lacey.
"Can I take him home with me?" Katie says, making me giggle and little bit jealous. I slap her arm. "What?"
"Didn't you just go on like your third date with John?" April says it before I do.
"He hasn't even kissed me yet!" Kate almost wails. "I mean, he's done it on my cheek but that's it." She pouts and I feel bad for her. She really likes John and he keeps asking her out on more dates, so why can't he grow some balls to kiss her?
"Maybe he's saving your first kiss together for the perfect moment," April says, reassuring poor Katie.
"Gosh, I hope it's that," Katie says. "Because the other reason would be..." She looks away, hurt by what she's thinking.
Lucy finishes her sentence. "He doesn't like you enough to kiss you."
"Luce!" I spit out. "Katie. I'm sure it's the first one."
Lucy gives an apologetic look to Katie. Sometimes Luce has a huge mouth.
"Well, he said we could hang out on Friday afternoon since we both have a morning exam. Maybe I could make the first move..." Kate suggests.
"Yes! Oh my god, that'd be so romantic, Katie!" April's voice has gone high, which it always does when she's excited. Katie beams at the thought of this and I can see in her eyes she is planning on doing it now.
Katie almost shouts, "You know what? I will." Then I see Alex at our booth again. Damn, he is beautiful.
"Uh, I have your drinks," He says, eyebrows knitted towards Katie. He must've heard part of our conversation and seen how confident she got. Alex places all our drinks down in front of us.
"Have you all chosen what you'll eat?" He asks, grabbing a pad of paper and a pen from his apron. I hadn't really so I put my nose in my menu and tried to look for something. Luckily, April went first and then it went around the table. I saw BLT and ordered that, voice a little shaky when he made eye contact with me again. His eyes are a glowing hazel. I wonder what they look like up close. "Got it. Be back soon." His eyes were on me on again before he left and he flashed me an award-winning smile. My jaw drops and then he's gone, walking back to the bar.
"Did he just..?" April says, pointing to me.
"He just...s-smiled at me." I say. "A gorgeous flippin' boy just did that!" I'm giggling uncontrollably.
"He must like you or something," Luce says sarcastically.
"Shut up, Luce!" Katie says and Lucy looks taken aback. "Yeah, that's right. Our little Jules could have a boyfriend again so you are not messing her up or getting all sarcastic about it!" Katie crosses her arms and takes a sip of her, what I presume is, coffee. Katie is an avid coffee drinker, especially during exam week.
"Okay, okay, I deserve that, I guess." Lucy says holding up her hands as if she surrendered. "You can have pretty boy, then, Jules."
"Thank you, Katie, Luce," I say. "But, I don't think he will think of me as a potential lover when I am but a mere customer."
"Oh, potential lover, did you say?" April asks, winking uncontrollably.
"God, I wish!" I laugh and the girls laugh, as well. We all know I've done nothing more than kiss. My relationship with Nick wasn't that long. It was only a month and two days, to be exact.
"He does resemble a sex god..." Lucy says, dreamily looking over to where he was at the bar. He was laughing at something an old woman said to him. His eyes lit up again; I could see them from all the way over here.
I sigh. I wish he could be mine. All the boys at our school are still immature and the ones that aren't, which is a few, are taken. Example: Peter. He's a nice guy. Decent looking. But everyone knows him and Luce have somewhat of a "thing". So, girls stay off of him. Plus, Luce can be scary sometimes.
I'm still staring at Alex over at the bar, while the girls are off in their own conversation. He's wiping the bar down, with his arm muscles flexing and contracting under his skin. I want to run over there and touch his arms (as creepy as that sounds).
I can't take my eyes off him. He just...there's something about him. He is attractive; there is no denying that. He goes back into what I assume is the kitchen. I pout towards no one in particular.
I'm fooling myself to think he would even look in my direction. I'm not special. I'm not gorgeous like April. I don't have guts like Lucy. And I am not as confident as Kate.
I'm just plain, old, simple Julia.
I sigh and then am snapped back into reality by Kate kicking me below the table. "Hey, you good?" She asks.
"Huh? Oh, uh, yeah. I'm fine." I try to sound convincing. I think it works. Kate's face washes over with relief.
"So, when is the band gonna play?" Lucy asks April.
April checks her phone. "On their website, it says they'll start around 8 and its 7:32 right now."
"Yes! We can stay!" I say happily. "C'mon, Alex bring our food back so the band can start and I can obsess over them for the next few months!"
All the girls giggle, knowing it's true. Even a year after something big happens; I'll still bring it up like it was yesterday.
"The website has reviews of The Way's other performances," Aprils says, tapping on her phone. She always has the latest technology. A plus of being the only daughter of a CEO.
"Let's hear some of them." Katie says, scooting up in her seat. Katie isn't much for bands and other music. She's a much more classical person.
"Here's one: 'punk rock with a splash of pop. Hot drummer and guitarist.'" April says. I see her fingers tap, tap, tapping at her phone again. "'entertaining show for The Way. I could see them going far in life'"
"They sound good." Katie says.
I look over to the stage again, seeing the same guys who were setting up talking to a girl with bright red hair. I wonder if she's one of the groupies. Hanging on every last word in their songs. Thinking it's about her.
Groupie Girl walks over to the bar and sits on an open stool. I see Alex come out of the kitchen with (hopefully) our meals. Groupie Girl gives him one of those flittering fingers wave and he lifts his chin at her.
"Guys, did you see that?" I ask my table and all of their heads whip towards where I'm looking.
"What? What am I looking at?" Lucy says, lifting herself out of the booth and over the wooden backboard. I told you she was short.
"Alex with Grou- I mean, that red-haired chick," I catch myself before saying Groupie Girl.
"Oh, the girl he's talking to?" Lucy asks, head peeking from the top of our booth.
"Yeah."
"She's twirling her hair." April points out.
"Yuck." I want to gag.
"She needs to die her roots." Katie says, touching her hair self-consciously. Katie dies it a darker blonde.
"She needs to put some clothes on." Lucy says. "She wears less than me and that's pushing it a little."
Groupie Girl is only wearing a black tank top and ripped up shorts. It's a warm summer but not that warm.
"Alex doesn't look interested. That's good right?" I say, biting on my nails.
"Yes. Oh, oh, he's picking up the food and heading towards us." April says and hastily turns around. "Guys, stop staring!"
------------
I'm...a bit late. Whoopsies.
Anywho, hope you enjoy! In my opinion it was a bit boring but you got to know Kate a little more. And you meet Groupie Girl. Hmm, I wonder how she could be involved...(;
