Everest

My alarm clock sounded as loud and as annoying as ever. I groaned rubbing my eyes reaching to turn it off. I looked at my phone climbing out of bed and stumbling toward the bathroom. 6:50 am, great. I turn on the light in the bathroom and look at myself. My black hair was all over the place and a pimple looked like other wanted to pop up on my chin. My mixed skin looked more pale than tan and I sighed. You think a whole summer in hot Puerto Rico I would hold the little bit of a tan. "Well smile Eve at least your friends don't get to see you looking so bad. Considering there all back home." I said sarcastically as I grabbed my toothbrush. I had moved two thousand miles from my life and friends in Georgia to the vast unknown of Long Beach, California. Thanks to my dad leaving my mom for someone ten years younger we would still be in Atlanta with my friends laughing about last year and preparing for this year but instead I'm getting ready to start the first day of my Junior year at a totally new school. I sighed and brushed my teeth and straightened my hair grabbing my favorite pair of gray skinny jeans and Marilyn Monroe of the shoulder shirt and jumped in the shower. I washed and tried to wrap my mind around that I would be at a new school. I got out and got dressed sliding into some flats, a beanie, and grabbed my bag heading downstairs. My mom was in the living room unpacking boxes which are all she'd done for the past three days. "Hey, ma I'm heading out," I said from the kitchen grabbing the car keys. "Alright Chickadee have a good day," she said coming and giving me a hug. I hugged her back and went out in the garage getting into the car. I slide the key in and sighed starting the car and pull off.

It took me forty-five minutes to get to school in all the morning traffic. In Georgia, it only took me ten minutes to get to school but there are so many people coming and going. As I pulled up people were everywhere. talking on benches, throwing football's, talking, and just sitting around. I got out the car slowly just looking around. The campus was huge, much bigger than I expected. I walked into the main building and reading the signs to the main office. As I entered the small office I saw women sitting at a desk looking through a stack of paper. "Um excuse me?" I said as I approached the desk. she looked up at me like she was already tired and the day just started. "What can I help you with honey," she asked like she really didn't want to help me at all. "I'm new here," I said and was about to explain but she stopped me. "Everest Rae McCormick right?" She said turning to grab a blue folder out of a basket. I nodded as looked at her computer screen tapping a few button and then the printer started. "Here's your schedule and your locker number, and code. You have two empty periods that you would feel with after school practices like volleyball or cheerleading. Once you pick those they will be filled. Mr. Hawthorne will be your homeroom teacher and he's in room 46C. You can take the elevator or the stairs." she said handing me my schedule and wrote something on a piece of paper. "Here's your pass to homeroom in case you're late." she said and looked at me "Can I help you with anything else?" I shook my head still processing everything. She nodded making a face like she didn't believe me but went back to the file. I turned and headed out the door walking toward the elevator signs. The halls were quiet minus a few people at their lockers. I walked up to the elevator and pressed the button and waited. I looked over the schedule again seeing that I had Trig after homeroom and Spanish after that. That won't be hard for me being Puerto Rican and African American. The elevator doors opened and I stepped in pressing the C button. The elevator started up and then slowed stopping on level B and as the door opened two people stumbled in lips locked together. I looked at the floor wishing I could blend in. I peeked up and they were deep in the kiss and while I was looking I noticed something. They both were girls. One girl was a foot taller than the other wear a snap back, loose jeans, a short sleeved shirt, a letterman jacket, and some Jordan's. The shorter girl in the short shorts began to kiss on her neck. I didn't realize I was staring until the bluest eyes met mine. I blushed but couldn't pull away from her eyes. A smile played on her lips as her hands wrapped around her waist and created down to cup her ass. The girl gave a giggle of approval. The door of the elevator opened with a ding and I snapped out of it and got out hurrying down the hall. What in the hell did I just witness? Two lesbians? A stud with eyes so blue you can help but stare. There was a strange pang in my stomach. I rounded a corner and leaned against the wall. Why was I staring? That wasn't even my business. I'm not even a lesbian. My phone vibrated in my pocket and I pulled it out answering it.

"Hello?" I answered and cursed myself for sounding flustered.

"Hey, Eve!!" My best friend said from the other end and I couldn't help but smile. "I called to ask how it's going it's lunch time there right?"

"Thanks, Jazz but I'm three hours behind you. I just got to school." I said calming down a little. Hearing my friend was a little bittersweet. I'm glad she hadn't forgotten about me but I was so far away from her and I could feel it.

"Oh Yeah silly me." She paused. "Char made the captain of the squad. Just like you wanted. She practiced every day." She said but I could tell she was dancing around something. Jazzmyn never really came out and said what was bothering her.

"Well, I'm glad someone good replaced me," I said playing along.

"Everest?"

"Yeah, Jazz?"

"Promise that you won't forget me down there is SoCal."

"Never." I could feel the heartache and the sting of tears start.

"Good because I won't forget you." She said and I could hear the crack in her voice.

"U-Um I gotta go Jazz. You're like my sister don't forget that."

"Never. Talk to you soon." She said and I hung up trying to get a grip on my rocky emotions. When I finally get a grip I make my way to my homeroom class. They day crept on slowly as I took my notes and kept to myself. In trig, we were assigned partners for a math project that will be the first and most important project of the semester. I got assigned to someone who rarely came to the class which didn't bother me. I wanted to work alone anyway. When the bell rang I was ready to go home. I grabbed up my things and walked through a crowd of hustle and bustle out to where my car was. When I got there the girl from the elevator was leaning against my car talking to a different girl. I walked up to the car and tapped her shoulder. She turned and looked at me. "Can I help you?" She asked those blue eyes cutting into mine. "You're leaning on my car," I said. She looked back at the car and back at me. "Sorry." She said doing the same smirk from the elevator. "Aren't you the new girl from like Georgia or something?" The other girl said. I glanced at her and nodded. "Yeah," I say and look back at blue eyes. "Can you get off my car. Now." I said making my way over to the car door. "Isn't you name like Amber or something?" Blondie continues as I got in my car. Blue eyes moved from the front of my car which was her best bet. I would hate to "accidentally" run her over.

"Nah her name is Everest." She said walking around to my door.

"How do you even know my name?" I said putting my keys in the ignition. I don't know why but she annoyed me and made me nervous at the same time.

"There's nothing I don't know." She said with a chuckle. I rolled my eyes. "Cocky much?" I grumbled as I buckled up.

"Nah. It'd just be reckless of me to not know the name of my trig partner." She said holding out a slip of paper through the window crack.

"You're kidding," I said grabbing the piece of paper and reading it.

"Don't sound so happy." She grumbled and rolled her eyes.

I sighed and looked at her. Not only did my partner not come to class she was a cocky grouchy unnaturally blue eyed stud. "Well? What are we gonna do?" I asked realizing she wasn't gonna leave without an answer.

"Give me your number," she said. "So we can meet up for this stupid project." She continued when I was about to disagree. I sighed and wrote my number down and handed it to her. She took it and nodded. "I'll call tonight." She said and the strangest feeling of hopefulness sparked in me. "Alright," I said and she steps back from the car turning her hat a little and smirked. "Bye elevator." She said as I pulled out of the parking lot and started off home cursing her for being so damn cocky.
