Chapter 12
"You know," Marshal said as I plopped my lunch down on the table everyone, except Cam, was sitting at. "One of these days, Romeo is going to get expelled --I mean, released from this school as well."
I furrowed my eyebrows. "What makes you say that?"
"I think it was because we saw Cam arguing with Kai on the way here," Avery said. "It was really bad arguing. Cam looked mad. Like, you know the feeling you get when someone takes your food without asking? He looked that mad, if not more mad. Like someone took his food and ate it right in front of him."
"Where were they arguing?" I asked.
"By his locker," Marshal said.
I left my food at the table before hurrying over to Cam's locker. I really didn't want him to get into any fights and recently, he had been getting a lot more angry than usual.
Kai was with his goons as he argued with Cam, who really was looking angry. To make things worse, Kai had a smirk on his face as if he was thoroughly enjoy getting Cam angry.
I grabbed Cam's arm and tried pulling him away, but he wouldn't budge. "Cam, don't let him get to you," I said.
"Yeah, Cam," Kai said. "You should listen to such a beautiful girl. Hey, you wouldn't mind if I ask her out, right?"
"You know what I'm going to do to you?" Cam asked, but I kept my grip on his arm so he wouldn't do anything. At least, I hoped he wouldn't force me to let go of him.
He didn't, thankfully. He just said to Kai, "This isn't over," before walking away.
I followed him to an empty corridor where he slid down on the floor against the wall. I slid down beside him. "You shouldn't let him get to you," I said.
"It's kind of hard not to when all he seems to do is try to get a reaction out of me," Cam said.
"Then don't give him one."
"It's not that easy. He's says stuff that really effects me."
"Like what?"
Cam sighed. "I don't want to get into it."
"Okay."
"You're not going to pressure me into telling you?"
"No. Why would I do that?"
"It's just....people really seem interested in knowing what my story is. If I won't tell them, they just keep asking."
"Well, I'm not going to keep asking you to tell me something you obviously don't want to talk about."
Cam gave me a small smile. "Thanks."
We just sat there, not saying a single word. I had to admit, I was more curious about him now. There obviously was something he didn't tell me and if it was bigger than him being a werewolf, then it was huge.
"Remember how I told you I didn't remember what happened to me before I was five?" Cam suddenly asked. "I actually do. I just rather not talk about it. I still remember my parents and my little sister. She was just a baby. All three of them were killed."
I looked over at Cam, who was just looking forward and I can see he was trying to hide the pain written across his face.
"Some people broke into our house," Cam said. "My mom told me to leave, so I did. I hid outside in the backyard because I didn't want to get too far. When I saw those people drive away, I went back inside and I saw my mom...." Cam stopped talking and took a deep breath. "That's why I'm never in the same place for too long. I don't want to get too close to people. I'm afraid they'll get hurt, or worse."
"I'm so sorry about your family," I said. "That must be horrible."
"Yeah, it is," Cam said.
"But it's not fair for you to isolate yourself from everyone who could care about you," I said. "I don't want you to feel lonely all the time."
"I don't," Cam said. "Not with you around."
"That's because you're my friend," I said. "I care about you, and you care about me. We're both going through something, more you than me, so don't be afraid to come to me if you ever need someone to talk to. I'll always be here for you."
"Thanks," Cam said. "So....How are you holding up?"
"About what?"
"Finding out you're adopted. You seem to be doing okay, but I know you're not."
I shrugged and looked down. "I just hate that they never told me about it. They probably don't even know what I am, and that's going to cause a lot of problems in the future. Do you....do you think I'll end up turning into one of those creatures?"
"I honestly don't know," Cam said. "Nobody knows that much about Laekrants, only that they suck energy out of full-blood humans. I don't know if they're people that turn into them, but I'm guessing it's a possibility since you're not one."
"I really don't want to turn into one," I said. "What if I do and I can't resist that urge to suck energy out of people? I don't want to hurt anyone."
"I think you'll be able to," Cam said. "Lately, I've been having these urges to go out in the wild and live as an actual wolf, including hunting animals, but I've been able to resist it. Mainly because I never had my full transformation yet but even when I do, I'm not going to go out into the wild."
"It might be easy to say, but to actually do it can be difficult," I said.
"I know," Cam said. "Difficult, but not impossible."
"Yeah, I guess that's true," I said, resting my head against the wall. "I've been having a hard time trying to focus in class, though. I've just been thinking about it all."
"Want to get out of here?" Cam asked.
"We probably won't have enough time," I said. "Lunch is going to end soon."
"Not really," Cam said. "And who says we have to come back after lunch?"
I furrowed my eyebrows. "You want to ditch?"
"Do I need to make it anymore obvious?" Cam asked.
I thought about it for a bit before pulling out my cell phone and texting Marshal, asking him if he could cover for me and Cam in class. Marshal may be a very open person, but that was only when it was for himself. Otherwise, he was really good at keeping secrets.
Marshal said he would and he promised he wouldn't say anything to my parents if he could have my lunch. I forgot that I left it there, so I told him he could have it.
"Okay," I said to Cam. "Let's go."

Eyyyyy I just realized Marshal and Avery is the second ship I have where the girl is older (year-wise, not month or day-wise, since both Isadora and Kamille are older in their relatinships). She's a year older than Marshal. cx
