Chapter 28
I still had a lot to learn about being a Laekrant but one thing I definitely had a grasp on was how our instincts were always very strong and most of the time, correct.
Rory said it was sort of like having the power of prophecy, the only difference being we didn't exactly see what was going to happen in the future. We only had a feeling that either something bad was going to happen or something good.
So when I had this strong feeling that something bad was on the verge of happening, I told Rory first. We were the only two Laekrants in this village so he was the only I could turn to in order to see if my instinct was wrong.
Rory was the only one in the house right now. In fact, he never left it. I didn't blame him because most people here still weren't fond of the two of us. At least before, he would still go for walks and try to find something to do.
Now, he didn't.
I asked him about it and he told me that he was just annoyed of all the judgmental looks he was receiving. I didn't even noticed them when I went out. I was used to it, I guess, since some people apparently were judgmental to people with coloured hair.
"Hey, Rory?" I asked. "Do you feel like something's... off? Like something bad is going to happen sometime soon?"
Rory immediately looked at me. "Okay, so something is going to happen soon since we're both feeling it. I've been meaning to tell you but for some reason, my instincts have been a bit off."
"Should we go tell the chief about it?" I asked.
"We could try but something tells me that he's not going to bother listening to us," Rory said.
Rory was probably right. Even though the chief was Cam's dad and I was Cam's girlfriend, that didn't stop the chief from showing his dislike towards me and Rory.
I still didn't get what he had against Laekrants even after Rory told them the truth about Laekrants; how only those injected with a serum would attack people.
I haven't even transformed into one yet so I didn't see how the chief could still dislike me.
Rory and I left our house and walked around the village to try to find the chief. It took a while but when we finally did, it seemed like he really was going to try to ignore us.
His expression immediately faltered once Rory called, "Chief!" and he noticed exactly who called him.
"What exactly do you two want?" the chief asked.
This wasn't going to work at all.
Rory looked at me and gestured for me to tell the chief as if me being his son's girlfriend would help him listen to us more. I wanted to tell Rory that wasn't the case but I might try.
"Well, as Laekrants, we have this thing that Rory likes to call a sort of prophecy," I said. "We can sense when something good or bad is going to happen, but we don't know exactly what will. And... We both feel like something bad is going to happen soon. Like, really bad."
The chief raised his eyebrow. "So you want me to believe that something bad is going to happen because of some... some feeling that you have? Do you not know how ridiculous that sounds?"
"You know what sounds ridiculous?" Rory asked. "Magic. Fairies. Witches. Werewolves. All those supernatural creatures that really exist. Do you think us Laekrants having strong instincts is really far-fetched?"
