Chapter 17

Mom and Dad was allowing Rory to stay here for a while. It took a bit of time thinking of an excuse as to why he needed a place to stay, but in the end Marshal was the one who thought of something. Not so surprisingly.

We just pretended Rory's parents left for a vacation while he was at the school dance and he thought he had his keys with him, but he forgot them at home.

It was the best we could come up with, but it worked.

The only flaw in the excuse was that Rory was actually homeschooled, so we were somehow going to have to take him to school with us starting Monday.

Mom and Dad were both out of the house right now, so she asked if I could make lunch for everyone because she knew if she let us feed ourselves, we would just eat a lot more food than we should.

       She wasn't wrong.

Cam walked into the kitchen while I was making lunch and headed straight towards the pantry. "You do know that I'm making lunch, right?" I asked.

"Yes, I smelled it," he said. "Grilled cheese and tomato soup is kind of lame."

"Well, sorry for not being an expert chef," I said.

"You're taking a cooking class in high school," Cam pointed out.

"Okay, but I'm also lazy," I said. "Anything else would take effort, and I'm trying to concentrate so I don't burn any of the grilled cheese. Do you know how hard it is making grilled cheese for seven people? Very hard, especially when everyone said they want two."

"Not me," Cam said. "I want three."

I gave him a flat look. "That totally makes it better."

"Don't blame me," Cam said. "Blame my always hungry stomach."

"You can at least help me," I said.

       "Sorry, but I'm busy."

       "Doing what?"

       "Scoping out Rory."

I furrowed my eyebrows. "Why would you want to do that?"

"I told you, his scent is just....way too familiar."

       "Then ask him why."

"Yes, I'm totally going to go up to someone I don't know and say 'Hey, why do you smell familiar?' Makes sense."

"You probably just saw him around school or something.

"Yes, I saw him around the school he doesn't go too," Cam said. "Don't worry, Juliet. It's not a bad feeling I have. I just want to know why his scent is too familiar for me."

"Alright," I said. "I still need help making lunch so can you scope him out later? Please? I'll be really thankful."

"Fine, but only because it's you asking," he said.

When lunch was made, I called up the stairs that it was time for lunch. Rory was the last one to come downstairs after we were all sitting at the table. He slept in today and missed the breakfast Mom and Dad made, and I could see why. He looked extremely tired with the large bags under his eyes.

"Are you okay?" I asked as he sat down.

"Yeah," he said with a sigh. "I was just up at night thinking about my parents."

"We're really sorry what happened," Abby said.

"Thanks," Rory said. "And thanks for letting me stay here. Well, I should be thanking Juliet's parents for that. And speaking of, wouldn't it just be easier to tell them what happened? They would understand."

I furrowed my eyebrows. "Why would they?"

"Because you're a Laekrant, and to be one, both of your parents have to," Rory said.

I sighed. "That's the thing. My parents aren't because I'm adopted."

"Whoa, really?" Marshal said. "Since when?"

"I don't know," I said. "They never told me, and they don't know that I know. Cam was the one who found my adoption papers."

"But you're sixteen," Marshal said. "Why wouldn't they tell you?"

"I have no idea," I said.

"I....I think I might now," Cam said. "Rory, were you adopted?"

"Uh....No?" Rory said. "I mean, not that I know of, but both my parents are Laekrants, so I'm pretty sure I'm not."

"Did your parents ever have another kid?" Cam asked.

"Yeah, actually," Rory said. "She went missing when we were one. How exactly do you know this? I thought you were a werewolf, not a mind reader."

"I'm not reading your mind," Cam said. "One more question. Is your birthday February 29th?" I dropped my spoon in my soup and the familiarity of the date.

"Are you sure you're not a mind reader?" Rory asked.

"Yes, I'm sure," Cam said. "I am good at smelling people's scents. Their natural scent, and not one they have from sprays and perfumes. Yours smelled way too familiar and I finally figured out why. Your scent is almost identical to Juliet's. It's off a tiny bit, but that's only because everyone has their own scent."

"So what are you saying?" Rory asked.

"Dude, come on, even I got it and I'm not part of this," Marshal said. "Well, I only got it because I know Juliet's birthday is also the 29th of February. It's such an odd date, so I bet it's not a coincidence your scents are almost identical and you were both born on a leap year."

"Wait," Rory said. "Are you saying that Juliet's my....my sister? My twin sister?"

"And would that mean that I'm not just adopted?" I asked. "That I was taken away from my real family? Are you sure it's not just one huge coincidence?"

"Come on, trust your werewolf Romeo," Marshal said.

"Are you ever going to stop calling me Romeo?" Cam asked.

"Romeo, we've been through this," Marshal said. "As long as your friends with Juliet, no. Especially since you're more than friends because you did kiss last night, so....Anyway, my point is you're probably right about it. What are the odds that they have almost identical scents, they're both Laekrants, and they were born on February 29th. Me thinks they are related."

"So....That does mean Juliet was taken from my family," Rory said. "And....You're all supernaturals. Are....Are you sure we're safe here?"

:O

So some of you found out in my ranting book that Rory and Juliet are indeed siblings, because someone commented about it and I said I thought more people would have guessed. It seemed obvious to me.

Then again, a lot of the time  you guys guess things that aren't obvious at all rather than when they're obvious. Like, in Different and the bonus chapters for Ginny and Nick, I gave a huge hint that Todd was gay and nobody guessed, but then when he said, "Aww, so cute. Nick is finally growing up," everyone started guessing he was gay. cx It happened with Jerome too. He said one small thing that didn't hint towards it and everyone guessed it but when I did hint towards it, nobody guessed it. cx
