Chapter 27
I hadn't seen Cam for a while. He told me he was going to go for a walk, but that was a few hours ago. I wasn't even worried for some reason. If something was wrong with Cam, I normally felt it.
He was probably really in need of some fresh air, so I left the house and went for a walk to see if I could try to find him. Even though I didn't feel like anything was wrong, I still wanted to make sure he was okay.
I didn't really like leaving the house alone. Not too many people in the village were too fond of me and Rory for being Laekrants, even if the chief was letting us stay here and after he told everyone the truth; about some Laekrants being injected with a serum to make them attack innocent people.
Rory and I still got a lot of dirty looks every time we were outside.
I had to ignore everyone when I was out looking for Cam. I was even tempted to go back inside but I couldn't. Not yet.
I thought I wasn't going to find Cam at all and I was starting to panic a bit until I heard a noise in a tree nearby. I looked up, seeing Cam crouching on one of the sturdiest branches.
"Cam?!" I called, and he looked down at me. "Why are you up in that tree?!"
"I'm just keeping a lookout!" he called back. "There's obviously some sketchy people just watching the village, waiting to strike! And quite frankly, I don't trust the official lookouts of the village!"
To be honest, I didn't trust them either but that was only because I didn't know who to trust. My so-called 'parents' completely ruined it for me. They were the two people I thought I could trust with my whole life, but I couldn't.
"Want to help?!" Cam asked me.
"Not really, no!" I said. "I can't even reach the lowest branch!"
"No surprise there!"
I had gotten so used to the short jokes made against me. Then again, I totally set myself up for the short joke.
Cam started climbing down the tree, hopping off when he was on a low enough branch. "You're not going to keep being a lookout?" I asked.
"I was up there for long enough and didn't see anything odd," Cam said. "I don't get it, though. Someone was here a few nights ago and was clearly here to hurt me, and possibly everyone else. But they haven't been seen since. My dad even sent people to scour the forest but they couldn't find anyone."
"I hope someone does before whoever it is comes back here," I said. "And it's most likely someone that Lunette and Jared are working with. If they ever come here undetected and does something to any of us..."
"Juliet, I'm not going to let that happen," Cam said, gently resting his hands on my shoulders. "Lunette and Jared, or the people they're working with, aren't going to be able to harm any of us. I'll make sure of it. Besides, Lacy did tell us about that group of people who protect supernaturals. We just have to figure out exactly how to find them."
"That's going to be hard," I said. "We didn't even know about them at all until Lacy told us."
"Yeah, and I doubt my dad will willingly tell us about them since Lacy said he doesn't trust them," Cam said. "Should we even trust them? I mean, Lacy did say they're not really supernaturals. They just have special abilities."
I sighed. Cam was right. Even though Lacy said they seemed trustworthy, we just didn't know for sure. It really seemed like there was nobody we could trust, and it sucked.
"I guess we're going to have to stay here for a while," I said. "Even though it seems like everyone hates me and Rory for being Laekrants."
"They'll get over it," Cam said. "They just have too many preconceived thoughts about Laekrants that might be hard to change. The more they see you and Rory around acting completely normal, the more they will get used to it."
I doubted it. We had been here for a few days now and Rory and I would still get glares every time we stepped outside.
Cam and I headed back to the house, where only Rory was. The others always found something else to do outside of the house, but I didn't blame them. They were spending a lot of time with those who were the same supernatural being as them, and it was helping them regain their energy after being weakened by Lunette and Jared.
"Oh, finally, I'm no longer alone," Rory said once Cam and I walked through the door. "Well, I might feel like a third-wheel since it's you two who are here. Then again, you two are not really the PDA type of couple."
"Probably because Cam would rather be eating food," I said, right as Cam decided to walk to the kitchen to find something to eat.
He only groaned as he opened the fridge. "There's nothing but fruit and vegetables! I need some protein! We should have gone to the gas station first and bought a lot of beef jerky or something. Would it be bad if I leave the village to go there one day?"
"Yes," I said. "Those people can still be out there. I don't like staying here, but it's the safest right now."
Cam sighed and grabbed an apple from the fridge. "I'll guess I'll just suffer with this apple."
I flopped down beside Rory on the couch he was sitting on. "So, you don't like being here too, huh?" he asked.
"Of course not," I said. "All I get is evil looks from people. I mean, do I even look threatening?" I could tell Cam was going to say something about my height, so I looked over at him sitting down at the kitchen counter. "Don't say it."
Cam only smiled. "I wasn't going to say anything."
I looked back at Rory, who looked like something was bothering him. "You okay?" I asked.
"Yeah, I'm fine," Rory said. "Kind of. It's nothing to worry about, though."
"Are you sure?" I asked.
"Mhmm."
I didn't believe him but I also didn't question him. He might be my twin brother but we barely knew each other, as horrible as that sounded.
I did have a feeling it was about us being treated horribly here. If only there was a way we could find those Protectors and get out of here.
