Chapter 15
Mom and Dad were actually taking us to the mall today. Mom asked about the dance and after we all said we wanted to go, they offered to take us to the mall since we didn't really have anything to wear that fit the theme.
Yeah, as it turned out, the dance was a masquerade theme, so Avery was way off with her three guesses.
We were going to be heading to the mall in my old city, actually, and honestly, I was a bit hesitant to go. I know my old friends loved spending their weekends there, and I hadn't seen or talked to them since I moved since they never answered my texts or calls. Or if they did, they said they were 'too busy' to talk.
It took a long time for me to convince my parents to let me take my car. Since both of my parents were coming, they were going to take both of their cars meaning there would be room for all of us.
They didn't understand why I wanted to take my car, so I told them I just liked driving. That was true, but the part I didn't tell them was that I wanted to spend time with Cam since I was so used to me driving him to school.
To make things better, Cam was taking forever to get ready and everyone else was getting impatient, so I told Mom I could wait for him and everyone else could just leave. I know she didn't like the idea of it, but she wasn't going to say anything in front of the others.
Right as they left, Cam came down the stairs. "I never get how you're always the last one to get ready," I said. "Especially when you sometimes look like you just rolled out of bed."
"Well, me being the last one means you get to drive me," he said. "I think it's a win-win."
"You took forever on purpose?" I asked.
"No, I was all ready for a while," he said. "I was just waiting for them to leave. Come on, you really think your mom was going to let me in the car with you when we go to the mall? It's different on the way to school, but there would have been room for me to go into another car."
"Yeah, that's true," I said. "Should we go?"
"Not yet," Cam said. "They're still in the driveway, arguing about which car they're getting into. Well, it's mostly Marshal and Abby arguing. Abby wants to be in the same car as Avery, but so does Marshal, and Theo doesn't want to be alone, but they don't want to cram into the same car."
I furrowed my eyebrows. "How do you know that?"
"Well, they're not really being quiet about it," Cam said. "My hearing."
"Ah, right, your heightened senses," I said. "Is it hard at times? Like, hearing so many things?"
"Not really, no," Cam said. "I got used to it, and I can mostly tune it out if I'm not focusing on it, which isn't hard to do when I'm focusing on your beautiful voice."
I smiled softly. "You shouldn't be flirting."
"And why not? There's no harm in flirting."
"With us, there kind of is."
"....Yeah, you're right. We can go now. They finally just drove out of the parking lot."
"Okay."
I grabbed my keys before we left the house with me locking the door behind us. We then got into my car and I began driving to the mall with Cam, like always, asking me if it was difficult seeing over the dashboard.
