Chapter 9

Around four o'clock, there was going to be a parent-teacher conference that we all had to go to. Dad was going to drive start from work to the school, so, like always, I had to drive someone to the school.

I already knew it was going to be Cam. He was always the last one ready to go places, so I got used to him being the passenger in my car and asking if I can even reach the gas pedal.

Or ask what color I was going to dye my hair next.

Or ask if it was annoying having to have my seat so close to the gas pedal.

Mom and the others were getting ready to go, whereas I had to wait for Cam. I swear, he took more time getting ready than all the girls in the house combined.

Well, I didn't really blame him because a lot of the time, he was unable to fall asleep because of his half-transformations, or whatever they were.

Right as they were about to leave, Mom looked at me. "Cam actually went for a walk in the forest, by the way," she said. "He should be back soon."

       "Got it," I said.

After Mom left with the others, I waited for about five minutes before deciding to go get Cam. I put on my shoes and a sweater before walking to the backdoor. I entered the code in the keypad, then walked out of the house and headed to the forest on the other side of the gate.

I followed the path, hoping I would find Cam soon otherwise we would be late to the parent-teacher conference. Not that I really cared, but I didn't want Mom and Dad getting mad at me.

After walking for about five minutes, I finally ran into Cam who was walking in my direction. "There you are," I said. "We have to go to the parent-teacher conference."

"Oh, right," Cam said. "I was hoping I wouldn't have to go. My grades aren't exactly the best."

"Hey, don't worry about it," I said. "My parents are dealing with six teenagers, so there's a higher chance of someone getting low grades. That, and my grades had never been that high as well. They won't get mad. They'll probably just start being a bit more strict with us doing our homework."

"I'd rather have them get mad for a day, then forget about us doing our hom--" Cam suddenly stopped mid-sentence as his eyebrows furrowed.

       "What is it?" I asked.

       "It's just....I smell something odd."

       "Like what?"

Cam didn't reply as he started looking around. I started looking around too, though I didn't really know what I was looking for.

My eyes soon landed on something bright red peering through the bushes. The more I looked at it, the more it looked like eyes. Bright red eyes.

       "Uh, Cam?"

Cam followed my gaze and as soon as it landed on the red eyes, he said, "We need to go," before grabbing my hand and pulling me out of the forest.

Cam was a very fast runner and I was having a hard time keeping up, even with my hand in his. I had no idea what those eyes were but judging by Cam's reaction, it wasn't anything good. I mean, what good could come out of something with red eyes.

We soon got back to the house and Cam released my hand to open the gate, then the backdoor. Right as he walked in and I was about to, the door slammed shut. I tried opening it, but it wasn't budging. "Why did you close the door?!" I asked.

"I didn't!" Cam said, then moved to the window beside the door so I could see him. "It closed by itself!"

"Oh, like that's possible!" I said.

"You really think I would lock you out there with them?!"

"Who's them?! You know what, forget it. Try the code."

       "I don't know the code."

       "It's 5-5-5-6."

Cam typed that into the keypad and it beeped, but the door wouldn't open. "Oh, no no no. They're doing it."

       "Again, who's they?"

Cam didn't answer, mainly because I heard a growl. I turned around, seeing two wolf-like creatures in the backyard and slowly making their way towards me. One thing for sure was they were not full wolves, with their beating red eyes, their pitch black fur, saber-sharp canine teeth, and a nose scrunched up.

"Cam, what are those?" I asked. "And why are they here?"

"They followed us," Cam said. "They're called Lakraents. They....they feed on the fear of full-blood humans."

       "They what?!"

"Juliet, you have to listen to me," Cam said. "They can control things with their mind. That's why I can't open the door, because they sensed that I'm a werewolf and they're leaving me alone. You can't show any fear."

"That's kind of hard to do when they look like that."

"Juliet, trust me. You don't want to be bitten by them."

       "No, really?"

"Now isn't the time for sarcasm. Don't show any fear, and they'll go away."

I couldn't do it. I couldn't pretend I wasn't scared of these creatures coming closer and closer, causing me to back up against the door.

"Cam, you've got to open the door," I said. "Please."

"I can't open it," Cam said. "They won't let me."

"Then try harder! Use your werewolf strength!"

"I don't have my full strength because I've never gone through the first transformation yet. Juliet, please, just don't show any fear."

The Lakraents got closer and closer to me, which caused my heart to beat faster. Right as it looked like they were going to launch themselves at me, I looked away and closed my eyes.

       I felt nothing.

       Literally nothing.

And I was too scared to open my eyes.

I suddenly felt something against my leg, so I slowly opened my eyes and saw both of them rubbing their heads against my leg like a dog would do with its loving owner.

These....didn't look that threatening at all.

They then both looked up at me before taking off and heading back into the forest.

The backdoor opened and Cam was standing there. "I guess the showing no fear thing worked," I said.

Cam looked at me. "Juliet....I was able to sense your fear, and I was inside the house. You were not showing no fear."

"Well, they didn't bite me," I said.

"Yeah, I know," Cam said. "But, like I said, they only go for full-blood humans who show fear. You were clearly showing fear."

       "So?"

       "So....What are you?"

Ooh. :O

Lol, I made those Lakraents up one day in school and I tried sketching it, but it ended up looking like an adorable little puppy. cx Not threatening at all. OOPS.

Guys, I've fallen more in love with Theo, who barely talks in this book. cx I wrote a short story on him for school about his backstory and he's so adorable. <3

I finished this sooner than I thought it would. It's only three minutes past midnight and I thought I was going to be up a lot later writing it because I was studying for my midterm as well. cx
