Evan wakes up to a loud, obnoxious beeping, one that is clearly coming from a alarm clocks. Evan's hands are shaking, so it takes a little bit too long to turn it off. Evan notices almost immediately that Connor is still absent from the room, and Evan is almost too afraid to leave. Still, he gets out of Connor's bed and walks towards the door, his hands shaking with anxiety. Evan opens the door, noticing Connor downstairs on the couch, staring a TV, which is currently on the news channel. Evan manages to walk all the down the stairs and sit down on the opposite side of the couch with Connor noticing.
"G-Good...good morning?" Evan chokes out. Connor's head snaps towards Evan, his face noticeably pale. Evan broke their eye contact and fixed his eyes on the ground, not daring to move his vision from the cold wooden floor.
"S-Sorry if I startled you," Evan said, his voice almost inaudible. Connor's gaze was still on him, Evan could tell. He could feel Connor's eyes blazing into his side.
"It's...fine. Speaking of fine, are you? You seem more startled than me." Connor says all of this in one breathe, while also managing to scoot closing to Evan. Evan tried to dissolve into the couch, or possibly just melt into oblivion.
Connor's eyes are still trained on Evan. Evan, whose has been sitting here nervously for ten whole minutes. Evan, who has probably been making a sweaty wet spot on the Murphy's couch. Evan, who had no idea why Connor was staring. Connor suddenly stood up and tugged on Evan's arm.
"C'mon, we have to get your stuff for school too. Why do you think I'm up so early?" Connor sounded tired, and Evan couldn't help but wonder why. Connor slid on boots, grabbed his bag, and pulled Evan out the door.
"Okay, lead the way. If I knew where you lived, then you wouldn't be here with me." The way Connor said it felt accusing, and made Evan feel ever so slightly guilty.
Evan lead the way, his hands shaking and twitching. Connor noticed how he'd wipe his hands on his pants every few minutes, nervously shaking them. They stopped in front of a small house, something that Connor was certainly not expecting.
"This...This is you house?" Connor snorted, sounding slightly amused.
"Yeah, my mom isn't rich."
"What about your dad?" Evan's breathing hitched ever so slightly. He ignored Connor and walked inside, fumbling with the keys in his pocket. He walked up to his bedroom, picking up his backpack where he had left it before he went to the park.
"Uh, did you hear me? I said, where is your-"
"I heard you the first time." Evan honestly didn't mean to sound so cold, but it came out that way. Evan sighed and spun around, meeting Connor's eyes. He looked a bit offended, honestly.
"My dad. He, uh. Left? When I was seven. He lives in Colorado with his never family. He never calls. Barely pays child support." Connor expression turns to one of horror and pity. Evan places his keys in his bag, and mumbles something about walking to school. Connor reaches for Evan's arm, and Evan spins around anxiously.
"I..regret pushing you the other day, so...here, take this." Connor hands Evan a sheet of typed writing. Evan looks at at it.
'Dear Evan Hansen,
Turns out today wasn't such a great day after all...'
"My...My letter?" Evan chokes, his eyes wide and his heart racing.
"I...I'm sorry I took it. It was a misunderstanding, I thought-"
"Did you read it?" Evan yelped. It actually came out like 'DIDYOUREADIT?!?' Connor looked down guiltily, and Evan let out a shaky breathe. Connor met his eye.
"I'm sorry."
