Connor's eyes were shimmering with water, tears threatening to spill. Evan sat down by his side, breathing shaky and hands fidgety. He slid his hand into Connor's and gripped it tightly. Connor whipped his head around towards Evan, his face bright red and his eyes wide. Evan doesn't let go. He can't. Because he just remembered the last time he'd been that afraid and upset in a car.

Seven year old Evan was practically hopping for joy when his mom finally agreed to drive him somewhere. A park! Since his dad had drove off, his mom hadn't left the house at all, but now she was! Evan jumped into the backseat and sat down, patting his hands rhythmically on the seat. He was humming and dancing and smiling with enthusiasm, but Heidi just looked tired. She began driving, and Evan squeaked in excitement, exclaiming, "Hey Mommy, now that you drive again we should go see Daddy! I bet he misses us!" Heidi's grip of the wheel tightened, her driving getting faster and faster until Evan was screaming for help and his mom was sobbing and the whole world became so small in the madness and--

"Evan? Evan?" Evan's eyes opened, and the first thing he noticed was the dramatic change in lighting. The sun was going down now, the sky painted a orange and purple mix. Evan looked at Connor, wondering how long they'd just...sat there. Holding hands. Again. Evan's mind flashed to the first day they'd interacting kindly, and jerked his hand away.

"S-Sorry! Sorry. Shit, sorry..." Connor gave him a pat, getting up and starting to walk towards the truck. Evan followed, sitting in the seat. And for a few minutes, their driving was completely silent.

"It was December. I was only 12 years old." Evan turned his head and looked at Connor. "What?"

"The day my dad found out."

"Found out what, exactly?"

"Found out that I was gay."
