Let Me Go

Chapter 13

"Paige it's going to be okay. The doctor should be out here soon to talk to all of us." Austin said trying to calm me down as we all (my family) sat out in the hospital's waiting room.

 I shook my head and wiped my tears away. He continued to rub my back soothingly as we all waited. Just as I looked up a strange old lady approached us. I nonchalantly elbowed Austin.

"My dear lord, honey are you about to give birth? I see why you been crying, that's a painful experience." The old lady said. 

 "Nope, not yet." I said with a weak smile. 

 "This little fella isn't coming out until next month."  Austin replied with a smile. 

 He rubbed my belly.  "Oh, you're gonna have a Christmas baby?  What a miracle on Earth." The lady said before raising her hands. Then the old lady heard her name called by the doctor and left the room, leaving me in deep thought.

I couldn't believe how much had changed since Austin had left for college. I had made the mistake on seeing his best friend, which now we barely talk to one another, Austin had gotten into the accident, we had gotten back together, and we were now married and having a baby. I looked over at my dad who sat beside me and took his hand in mine. I felt so bad for my father. I remember how hurt I was when Austin was in the accident and he wasn't even actually 'mine.' My father sat here in the waiting room waiting to hear the news on how his wife of 30 years was doing after her heart attack.

"Dad," I said before a sigh. 

 "I'm praying mom will be okay." I whispered.

  "She will be.  She's a tough woman, Paige.  Your mom...she's a lot like you."  He said, making me smile.  

Tears came to both our eyes and then we heard the doctor come in through the waiting room door.  He said it would be alright for us to come back and see my mother.  I was worried until we walked in the room and she smiled her same, usual smile back at my dad, Austin, and I.
