Recognition

"Come inside Ellie, its raining." Mother held out her hand to me. I was getting too hot so I didn't touch her or even look at her. I knew eventually I would have to tell her I was going to prom. Inside the house I heard Jackson's wails of fear from the lightning and thunder.

"JACKSON STOP SCREAMING!" My mother yelled. He quieted down but now he just moaned. She closed the door behind her then looked at me. "Where were you?" She asked. Her posture was weird, it was like she was about to pounce on me. I shuffled my feet backwards and held on to my bag as best as I could.

"I-I went into town." I felt defenseless and weak for once. The coldness of her heart was affecting my fire. Like water putting out a flame short an quick. And once the flame is out, without a match, it can't start again.

"Why?" She stepped closer.

"Because....." I paused for a second and looked away. I thought of all the reasons why because of her this all wouldn't have happened. I began to grow hot again. "Im going to prom. And I needed to buy a dress."

"Your.... what?"

"Im going to prom." I said it slowly to get the message into her head. Her face dropped and so did her shoulders. She now looked normal, a little too normal. She smiled and walked closer to me. She held out her arms for a hug. I was confused, who was this woman? She held me in her arms and stroked my hair on the back of my head.

She chuckled. "No your not." She finally replied. I broke out of her embrace and backed away once again until I was in the family room. I gave her a 'what-the-fuck-why?' look. "There all going to laugh at you Ellie."

"Stop! No they won't! Brandon wouldn't allow that, hes a very nice guy."

"A boy? Your going with a boy?!?!" Her eyes grew larger then ever and he nostrils flared. I just nodded. "Oh Ellie, have I failed as a mother? That boy is going to talk to you and make it seem like he's 'loves' you. Then hes going to take you into his car an-"

"Stop it!"

"HES GOING TO TAKE YOU ELLIE!" She paused and walked closer to me once again. Veins popped up on her head. It pulsed along with her heartbeat. "I should know, thats what your father did to me." She circled around me like a vulture. "And I liked it." She whispered. "But from that sin, that sin of intercourse. I had you. When I first had you I thought you were cancer and I was dying."

"Momma thats awful."

"Oh? But its true. When I finally got home from the hospital I almost killed you. But at the last minute the blade of the knife stopped right before it touched you. I don't know why but it did."

"Thats enough!"

"Oh but Im not done Ellie..." She advanced towards me a little more. There was no place to run now.

"I don't want to hear this anymore!"

"I THOUGHT YOU WERE A GOD TEST!" She screamed. My inferno exploded and I felt like I had a tiny pool of lava inside me. And I finally burst.

"I SAID THATS ENOUGH!" The windows broke in scattering glass everywhere. The winds roared as I used my powers on my mother. I rose her off the ground along with all the other furniture in the living room.

"Ahhh!" She screamed and looked stunned around the room. She then looked to her feet and saw that they were no longer on the ground. Cries of fright emitted from her mouth.

"Im going to prom, and your not going to stop me." The lights flickered and I could feel the power radiated in waves of heat around me.

"Witch." Is all she could say.

"Im not a witch."

"Oh, the devils got you know." She looked around the room again still stunned about this. I didn't reply to her last comment. All I could do was smirk at her then drop her and the furniture to the ground. Once she fell she uncontrollably started crying and sobbing onto the rug. I just walked away, her crys of defeat made me feel stronger. Finally I had taken down the second most powerful controller in my life. Maybe this was my fate, or maybe this is just who I am.
