Trigger Warning
Pre-Smut Warning

"Dan, I'm just saying. You're almost eighteen." Mum said, offering me a sample of the oatmeal she was making in the pot. I kindly shook my head no.

"What if I never find my soulmate?"

"Oh, you'll find her. Don't worry." She forced some of the oatmeal into my mouth, and when she was looking away I spat it into the sink.

"What if I don't want to get married?"

"You're starting to talk like a mad man."

"No, I'm not. Plenty of people don't marry."

"But you aren't one of those people.

"I know mum, but, wouldn't you be open to the idea of, I don't know, dating outside of your soulmate?" I was trying to ease into the idea of me being with Phil, but it wasn't going too well.

"Well, I mean, as long as the people doing it know that they won't end up together anyway. Why waists your time on something not worth your time?"

"Okay, but, what if you really like someone, but they aren't your soulmate? Would you marry them instead?" I asked.

"If I loved anyone other than your father, I would still marry him, because he was my soulmate, Dan."

The word love made my eyes widen.

"Are you saying there was another person?" I asked.

"I'm not saying there was another person, Dan, but I am saying that you need to save your life for the person you're supposed to be with. Why? Do you like someone?"

"No!" I retorted immediately. "I just, wanted to know your full views on the, um, whole, soulmate thing." I twirled my bracelet around my wrist, trying to calm myself down.

"Well, you can ask me anything, honey."

"What about homosexual relationships?" Was the first thing to slip out of my mouth. She raised her eyebrows at me.

"You know it's uncommon to have a soulmate the same sex as you."

"I know but like, would you be offended if you saw a homosexual couple on the streets?" I bit my lip.

"Well, if they're soulmates, no. I wouldn't be."

"What if they weren't soulmates? And they were just together, because, um, they were happy?"

"What are you trying to tell me, Dan?"

"Nothing mum, I'm just curious."

"Well, I wouldn't approve of it, that's for sure. It's disgraceful to date somebody of the same sex that isn't your soulmate. Sure, it's not that great if it's a different sex as you, but not as bad as homosexuals."

My heart dropped.

"I don't believe you when you tell me you're curious." She blurted. "What's going on?"
