Jasmines's P.O.V
I awoke in the morning excited as I made myself a quick breakfast before going to the restaurant. I skipped out of my apartment happily, this is my day! and I get to celebrate it with all my new friends! Now that I'm 22 I feel more grown up even though I said that last year when I turned 21.
I made my way to the restaurant that seemed very busy today which should hold us off a bit but doesn't leave us completely off the hook, partnership or some type of addition to the place. I walked into the restaurant. "Happy birthday baby girl!" My mom cheered as everyone gathered around me.
"Thanks, mama," I reply.
"Your 22 one step closer to the grave," Jaclyn jokes.
Any elbowed Jaclyn who smirked. "So about my birthday party-" I started.
"Jasmine, I'm sorry but we can't come to your birthday party," My mom explains picking up a white cloth.
She started wiping the counter. "What?" I asked placing my hand over her hand holding the cloth.
"Don't worry, that's why we're all hanging out right now!" She cheered.
I smile. "That's great, do you think dad is going to call me?" I ask.
"Sweetheart, have you read the letter?" My mom asks getting back to wiping the counter.
I clear my throat. "No," I respond.
"And you expecting a call?" She asks facing me.
"Mom, I'll open it when I feel like," I reply folding my arms.
"When is that?" She questions.
I kept my mouth shut and decided not to say another word to my mama. I hated that I knew she was right. But I don't want to open the letter yet I'm too scared of what might occur on the letter or if he moved on. I played with the side of my shirt in silence as my mother continued to wipe the counter without aa word. "Okay, well I'ma say hi to grandpa," I inform her.
"You go do that, after that we got a surprise," My mom responds.
I nod my head and started heading up the stairs that are now starting get old and rusty. We could really use a replacement except for the situation where in it's not possible. I grazed my finger against the old white walls as I went up the stairs.
I spotted grandpa in the room taking a look at some old albums he has. He hummed along a Stevie wonder song called "Rocket Love" I warmly smiled as I motioned closer. Without my grandpa notice, I was able to sit down on the bed while he still looked through his albums. I tapped on his shoulder. He took a long stare into my eyes for a moment with furrowed eyebrows like he's trying to remember something. The thin line on his face stretched into a smile when he fully faced me. "Jasmine happy birthday!" He cheered.
Birthdays are one of the most cherished memories grandpa and I shared. He couldn't ever forget. He spread his arms wide open and for a hug and I give in hugging him back. "Jasmine, since it's your birthday so let's dance!" He cheered slowly getting up.
He then picked up one of his Stevie Wonder albums called "Hotter than July". I took the DVD carefully out of the holder and placed it on one of his radios. He turned it to "happy birthday" and reached out to dance with me. I kindly take my grandfather's hand dancing along with him being silly and living in the moment like when it was my sixth birthday.
Flashback
"Pop pop! can you put rocket love!" I cheered.
"Anything for you Jasmine," He responds.
