Getting out of Ms Black's office was a kind of relief. I was able to cool down from whatever happened to me back there. I also found out that the girls were completely happy with their schedules, and were only there for me. Walking back I was talking to Victoria; I found out she played the piano when Jade stepped in front of me. "Hello my little kitten," She all but purrs while running her finger down my cheek.
"Hi Jade," I try really hard not to sound annoyed.
"It's the last day before school; the headmistress said we can go out as long as we are back by 7 for dinner." She leans in close to my ear and whispers, "Can I take you on a lunch date in the quiet part of the park?"
I feel my face go red. I knew what she meant. EVERYONE knew what Jade's lunch dates were. I can't believe she was so blunt about it. She's been trying to get me to go out with her since I first got here, and she hasn't given up yet.
"I'm sorry, but I'm helping with the new students today."
Her face drops before it becomes determined, "That's okay, another time," and she walks off.
Shawna whistles, "She's got a huge crush on you." Her words make me stumble. A crush? Is that how I feel? I have a crush on a woman? Do I like girls? I mean, the feelings I've read about in books with crushes. The butterflies. The sweaty palms. NO SANG. YOU ARE STRAIGHT. I mean, I haven't had much contact with boys. Well, really any contact with boys, but I would know if I was gay before I was 18, around girls constantly, wouldn't I? I mean there is nothing wrong with being gay, but I am not. Right? RIGHT? My internal debate going on over my newly budding sexuality, that honestly I'm not sure really exists because I JUST saw this teacher. We barely even had a conversation! It takes more than that for a crush, surely. I tune back into the world with Shawna's hand waving in my face. "Earth to Sang." I blink a few times before swatting her hand away. "Ah, she is still there." I huff, and raise a brow.
"What is it?"
"Well, I was just observing the crush that girl has on you."
"Oh, Jade, I mean, a crush? I guess."
"You guess? Cupcake, that girl just asked, point blank, to bang you." I blush at Lucy's words. Way to be blunt about it.
"It's not like I'm the first, and only one." I mumble. Shawna nods, and Victor and Kota are blushing.
Lucy smirks, "So you have some competition." She says as she slings her arm over my shoulder.
"Saying I have competition implies that I'm interested in her and I'm not, so no, there is not competition," I tell her.
"Oh, I see, so who are interested in then?" Shawna then asks.
Miss Black's piercing eyes flash in my mind, making my face glow and a frown to appear. I just shake my head at her. "Shawna, I haven't been around a boy in years in order to be interested in one. Being that I'm straight, I can say, for sure, that I am not interested in anyone." At least, I think I'm straight. No Sang, you're straight. Definitely straight, and one fifteen minute conversation with a teacher doesn't change that!
"Not around any boy?" Victoria asks as a look flashes between the four.
"Nope, an all girls school doesn't really allow that Victoria."
"What about holidays?"
"I stay here."
"Not being around family must suck." I want to comment. I want to tell them that it would be horrible for me to spend time around my family. That I would hate having to hide away in my room, fearing when my next punishment would be. That I would never go back to them. That as much as I hate this school, and what they do to the girls. That I'm safe here, but I don't. I don't say one word. I just nod mutely because that's what normal girls do. That's what someone without nightmares, bad homes ,and weird habits, like feeling when the air shifts would do. That's what I should do. I learned long ago that it's best to do what you should do versus what you wanted to. It's how I survive. It's how I will survive. One more year Sang. One more year.
"What about you girls?" I say as we get back to the room. "Interested in anyone?"
Shawna just smirks at me, Lucy's eyes glaze over with a faraway look and both Dakota and Victoria blush. Interesting. I smile, "You are! Tell me about him." Dakota chokes as Victoria's blushes even more. "Or um her, sorry didn't mean to sound-um yeah." Shawna chuckles and Lucy is still zoned out when she jumps and grabs her phone. As soon as she opens it, she let's out a chuckle. My eyes dart to Lucy as she quickly types something before she tunes into the conversation, and then trail back to Victoria. Her blush is still there, and her eyes are diverted. I then look over at Dakota and see she is looking at me still almost shocked, I tilt my head at her, as if saying 'are you going to tell me?'
"Nathan!" Dakota blurts out, shocking everyone. The other three turn as gawk at her, mouths hanging open.
"What?" I look between the four of them, confused as to why they look at her like that.
"Nathan, he's my, erm, boyfriend."
My eyes go wide, "You have a boyfriend! That's cool! Do I get to meet him? Are we good enough friends that I get to meet him? Are we even friends yet? Is that to fast?" I ask in a rush, blushing bright from what I feel is a bold statement. Lucy looks like she is five seconds away from breaking down in laughter, yet still shocked at Dakota's outburst. Victoria is staring wide-eyed, blush finally gone, and Dakota is trying her best not to blush, failing, but trying. Shawna is the one to break the silence I've created.
"Sang, Pookie, you're definitely our friend. I'm sure you'll meet Nate and the rest of the guys as soon as they can visit. Right girls?"
"Right."
"Of course."
"Yeah!" I giggle and let out a breath of relief, and then it clicks. The rest of the guys?
"What do you mean the rest of the guys? Are all of you dating someone?" Lucy's phone chirps again and she mumbles something. All I make out is 'bastard' and 'Gabriel'.
"Is Gabriel your boyfriend Lucy?"
"Yes!" Shawna says happily while Lucy chokes on air and Victoria bites her lip. Dakota expression turns to one of amusement quickly. "I, on the other hand, am single and ready to mingle!" Shawna finishes with a smile as Victoria rolls her eyes. Lucy shoots Shawna a quick glare. Wonder what that's about.
"Oh, that's cool. What about you Victoria?"
"No boyfriend here Princess." Victoria says a bit quickly with a blush.
Nodding I look to Dakota. "So, Nathan and Gabriel are coming on visitation?"
"And a few others."
"Who?"
"My little brother, North." Lucy says with a sly smile. A small boy-version of Lucy comes to my imagination again. It's still adorable.
"And Silas, North's best friend." A look crosses over Lucy's face when Silas' name is uttered.
"Is Silas your ex? That would be cliche." I say before thinking, and once it registers I blush and my eyes go wide.
"What-what makes you say that?" Lucy says with wide-eyes, at the same time Shawna gets a weird gleam in her eye and a sly grin comes across her face while she yells, "YES!"
"Well, um, you just got a look on your face when Victoria mentioned Silas."
"I was thinking about the payback I might have to get for the prank left both of them as a going away present." Lucy says with a smile as she shoots a look to Shawna. "We are close friends."
"Even after the break-up?"
"Yeah, we decided to stay close."
"Oh yeah, they're close." Shawna says with an evil smirk. Victoria goes wide-eyed and Dakota grips the bridge of her nose in frustration, yet the amusement is clearly visible in her eyes. I blush cherry-red at what she just insinuated.
Lucy's head whips towards Shawna, and a sly smirk comes across her face. "So Shawna, are you still talking to Owen?"
"Owen?" I question, glad that the 'close' comment is dropped.
Lucy quickly answered before Shawna could open her mouth. "Yes Owen. Shawna is VERY close to Owen and has been talking to him for years now."
"We are friends!" Shawna tries to sputter out, and Dakota is biting her lip in a smile. Victoria is faring no better, looking between the two girls.
"Oh yeah, very close friends. For awhile, I thought they were dating. Owen is very picky about what he calls people, but little Shawna hear just got to him somehow."
"Aw!"
"YOU THOUGHT WHAT!?"
"I mean, I think we all really did. They meet once a week to check-in, kind of like a date night."
"That is so sweet!" I look at Shawna who is red in the face, glaring at Lucy who is smiling like a loon.
"It isn't a date night Lucy and you know it!"
"He cooks for you Shawna." Victoria points out.
"And it is just you guys at the house." Dakota adds with a calculating gleam in her eye.
"That's so romantic!" I exclaim. "He's definitely into you."
"He only does it because he lives alone, and I can't cook!"
"Understatement of the year." Lucy muttered, before perking up. "But it is romantic Sang, SOOOOO romantic. Gabe and I had a bet on when they would come out and tell us that they were dating. Of course, they haven't." Lucy pauses for a second, "Not yet anyway." I giggle at this and Shawna looks like she wants to strangle Lucy as her blush has spread.
"I'm very much so single Pookie. Pay no attention to the idiot."
"I don't know why Shawna. Owen seems so sweet, and it's alright to admit to your crush, or um more if anything happened."
"They kissed." Dakota offers offhandedly.
"ONE TIME AND IT WAS NOT ENJOYED BY EITHER PARTY."
"Why? Was he a bad kisser? Are you a bad kisser?" I wonder out loud, but slap a hand over my mouth before I could do more damage. Shawna's eyes go wide as I go red, and Lucy bursts out laughing. Dakota and Victoria are both smirking, and holding back chuckles.
"NO!" Shawna yells in response.
"No, you aren't a good kisser Shawna?" Victoria asks with a sly smile.
"I am an excellent kisser Victoria!"
"So Owen was a bad kisser?"
"Well-" Shawna starts to sputter.
"Yeah Shawna, how was Owen's kissing ability?" Lucy says, the gleam very much so present in her eye.
Shawna just looks over the group before looking up at the ceiling. "Owen is a terrible kisser, and I am never kissing him again." She looks at us before taking out her phone, showing that she is done with the conversation. Lucy smirks, in what I assume is victory, and Dakota, and Victoria shrug before doing their own thing. I let out a tiny smile before I get out one of my books.
"Hey," I call out to them, mid book selection, and they turn their attention to me. "Do I get to meet Owen too? He is a part of your friend group right?"
They all widen their eyes before looking at each other.
"Yes, no, I mean, he is our friend, but you won't be meeting him," Victoria answers before turning back to her phone.
Alright then.
