Chapter 1 (Tommy’s Pov)
Mom and I were heading to San Diego for Christmas. Mom had felt that we needed a vacation someplace nice. I think it’s because of what happened with Dad and she’s just trying to get away from the pain. My dad had gotten into a drunk driving accident last year and had died. Yes he was the drunk driver. You see my dad was an abusive alcoholic. He would always come home drunk and then abuse me and Mom. Sometimes he wouldn’t ever be drunk. You’re probably wondering why I didn’t run away or Mom didn’t divorce is filthy ass. Well that’s because even though he abused us he was still a good father and I loved him. He used to take me and Mom to the zoo all time and then we would go out and get ice cream and eat at this pizza place that served the best pizza ever. He even helped me build things and he taught me how to drive and pick up girls. He still loved us and never cheated on Mom at all. It was hard on the both of us when he died.
I heard this unhealthy sound coming from our truck. Our truck slowly slid to the side as Mom turned on her hazards.
“Oh fuck!” I heard Mom screaming.
“What’s wrong Mom?” I asked.
“I forgot to fill the truck up. It’s a good thing that we’re by Charlotte's house and she can help us,” Mom answered.
Charlotte Taylor is Mom’s best friend. She is married to Steve Taylor. She has two kids. Samantha and Daren. They’re twins and the same age as me. The funny thing is Daren looks a lot like his dad when Samantha looks like nobody in her family. If Samantha and Daren weren’t so much a like and had this freaky twin thing I would think Samantha was adopted. Also Steve isn’t the biological father. He’s their stepfather.
A few minutes later Steve came and got us. Mom and Steve talked the whole way there just catching up on life I’m guessing. I wasn’t really listening to them because I was playing my music and wondering how Samantha was going to take my being over at her house seeing as we kinda hate each other.
We spent Christmas at their house last year but she hadn't said a word to me unless it was to tell me something. Samantha is a naturally shy girl but normally after a couple hours she would be talking to you but throughout the whole week that I stayed she didn't say a word to me. I knew that the reason was because of what I did when we were younger. We use to play like normal kids and talked about how some kid stole our favorite crayon but as I got older my dad started to beat me when when ever he got drunk, mad or pissed off. As the beatings got worse I figured it was ok to hurt people when people annoyed you. I would then transfer all my anger towards her because she was always so weak and wouldn’t hurt me back. I remember one day when I went over to Samantha's house and she had grabbed a crayon that I wanted. I grabbed her arm and twisted it so hard that she fell to the ground letting go of the crayon. Once she was on the ground I slammed her head into the ground till she was crying. Our parents came downstairs. I had to leave and we never saw each other after that until last year. We were about ten years old at the time.
Finally we were at Steve's house. The house was huge. It was at least four levels. I didn't realize how big it was but to tell you the truth I don't remember it being this big last year.
Well at least I won't have to worry too much about seeing Samantha, so I thought.
I got out of the back seat and walked into the house. Charlotte came down the stairs to greet us.
"Hi Chantelle. Hi Tommy!" She greeted us, " You can come upstairs."
My mom and I took our shoes off and put them in the closet. My mom followed Charlotte upstairs. I decided that I would stay down here and wait to go. Mom and Charlotte would probably want to catch up a little bit before we leave for the airport. I went to sit on the couch and listen to my music.
