Chapter 9 (Samantha’s POV)
We were back at the barn. I was helping Tristan clean his cuts and Daren held an ice pack to his black eye. Daren was shooting Tristan death glares and Tommy stood in the doorway with a satisfied grin on his face. I don’t know why he was satisfied but I had feeling it was because of the fight that just happened.
“What were you thinking?” I turned and looked at Daren.
He looked down at his feet before looking up at me with a very guilty look on his face, “I can’t tell you here.”
“Fine,” I turned and looked at Tristan, “Are you okay now?”
“Yeah I’m fine now,” Tristan replied.
“Good. We have to leave now. See you later!”
Me and both guys left the barn. We started the twenty minute drive to the mall.
“Daren you have some explaining to do now you know,” I tried to keep my voice kind and not too harsh.
“I know. Does he know about Mom and Dad?” Daren pointed to Tommy.
“Yeah he knows,” I answered Daren.
“Okay,” Daren paused for a second before continuing, “Before Dad left he made me promise to protect you and be the father that he couldn’t be. He also told me that if anyone hurt you to hurt them back just enough to warn them that they better not hurt you again.”
I sat back in the seat taking all this new information in. Has Daren been talking to Dad all this time? Is that part of the reason why Tommy and I didn’t talk to each other for a while?
“One question,” I paused for a second, “Have you been talking to Dad after he left us?”
Daren’s already guilty look turned more guilty, “Yes. I go and see dad almost once a month.”
“Why haven’t you taken me with you or told me?” I asked.
My voice wasn’t so calm anymore and tears started to blur my vision. I thought my brother and I told each other everything. Why did he keep this a secret from me? What else is he hiding from me? Do I still trust Daren?
“Dad didn’t want me to bring you to see him. He’s worried that you will hate him for leaving.” Daren looked unsure of his answer. I think that he isn’t telling me the reason why I can’t go and see him.
“Well I do hate him for leaving and I hate you for not telling me! I thought we told each other everything!” I snapped at Daren.
“Well you didn’t tell me that both Nick and Tristan hurt you!” he snapped back at me.
“I was protecting them from you!”
Daren let out a breath, “I’m sorry that I didn’t tell you about him sooner.”
“I don’t care. Tommy can you drop me off at the house then you and Daren can do whatever you want for the day,” I said.
I wasn’t in the mood to hangout with my brother right now. All I wanted to do was think things over. I will probably call Mady or Jenna later and see if they wanted to come to the mall with me.
Tommy pulled into the driveway and I jumped out. I walked into the house and ran down to my room. I crawled under my blankets and sat there. Why doesn’t my dad want to see me? Does nobody want me in their life? Would things have been different if Dad had stayed? Would I be able to live a life without abuse if he stayed? Am I just a disappointment to this family?
