Chapter 20
Right now Daren and I were knocking on Steve's bedroom door. When we got home from the barn we noticed Steve's car was in the driveway. We knew right then that he must have come home early from work.
We kept banging on the door but there was still no answer. We heard nothing. Daren and I looked at each other with worry. Where are they? I knocked in the door once more. This time the door flew open and Steve stood there looking angry. He literally had fire in his eyes.
"What do you two want?" Steve snapped at us.
"Where's Samantha?" Daren demanded.
"I don't know. I haven't seen her since the hospital," Steve lied.
"No you picked her up from the barn and brought her here," Daren stated.
"I don't know what you’re talking about!" Steve shouted at us.
I grabbed Daren's arm and tried to pull him away but he ripped it from my grasp. Daren stalked back over to Steve. They were now shouting incoherent words at each other. I walked back over to Daren and grabbed his arm.
"Let's go. We can come back when he's not here," I said.
It's a good thing Steve was yelling and too distracted to hear what I had said.
Daren had nodded his head and let me pull him down to his room. I knew he must feel defeated and that he couldn't save Samantha this time.
"Tommy, what if he seriously hurt her?" Daren asked.
"Then we will get her help and Dan can sue Steve for abuse," I told him.
"Are you sure?" Daren asked.
Daren looked like he was almost in tears. I felt bad for him. He was supposed to keep his sister out of harm and he can't do that right now. No I'm not gay. I just feel the same way... Useless.
An hour has past and Steve hasn't left the house. I was starting to get worried that he would never leave the house. Daren has completely shut down. He isn't saying anything or doing anything, he's just staring into the air. I hope he's okay.
I heard someone walk down the stairs and out the front door. We were in my room so we couldn't see who had left the house but I hope its Steve. I got up and walked upstairs. I looked out the window and saw that Steve's truck was gone. Before I could process the information I heard Daren yell, "Samantha!"
I ran upstairs and saw Daren standing by the bed next to someone curled up in a ball. I ran over and I barely recognized Samantha. The only way I knew it was Samantha was because of her hair. My stomach dropped and my heart broke at the sight of her. Daren was crying and yelling curse words. Daren was in no condition to do anything so I picked her up and carried her outside to the car. I set her gently in the backseat and got in. Daren followed suit and got in as well. I drove out the of the driveway and onto the highway.
"You need to tell me where your dad lives," I demanded from Daren.
"Okay. Turn left at the stop sign," Daren told me.
I turned left. We drove for about ten minutes till we finally pulled up to Dan's house. Daren and I jumped out. I grabbed Samantha and Daren held the door open for us.
"Dad!" Daren yelled into the house.
We waited by the front door for a couple of seconds before Dan came down the stairs. He took one look at us and came right over. He took Samantha from my hands and took her upstairs. Daren and I followed them. Dan gently placed Samantha into a queen sized bed with a purple blanket on it. Dan looked up at us with concern in his eyes.
