This rant is all about religion in the U.S. I am not saying that all religious or Christian people are bad. I am saying that there are a few people that tarnish the face of a religion.
I am a strong Atheist. I was raised without a religion so that if I were to have one, I could pick it later in life.
Anyway, I am all for LGBT rights. Why? BECAUSE THEY ARE HUMANS.
For years, and still today, states won't pass laws legalizing same-sex marriage. Because we are America and we can't give people we are afraid of their rights.
No matter what people say, we are and have been since the founding of our country, a Christian nation. The Pilgrims were a Christian sect - Puritan - and the branches off that religion were all Christian. Religious tolerance was only given to fellow Christians and Jewish; they believe in the same book.
Christianity infiltrated and, in a way, founded our government. "In God We Trust" on our money. Saying "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance. And we claim to have a separation of church and state?!
I should think not.
In the Establishment Clause (I had had to research this stuff for an essay in literature), it clearly states that establishing or funding a national religion is completely against the law.
Also that church and state are to completely separate.
And yet legislation legalizing gay marriage couldn't pass because it is "against the Bible" and it would mean that "the government wants us all to be gay and they'll take over!"
And people against it can't see that it is not similar to, but exactly like racial prejudice of the 1960's and today.
Religion has somewhat of a bad message here in the US. The Ku Klux Klan burned crosses on African Americans' lawns to scare them away. Pro-Life people blow up abortion clinics.
Ever heard of "thou shalt not kill"?
This kind of stuff bothers me to no end - the message of a religion is to love others and have respect for others, but the writings of all these MEN distort and dilute the real meaning.
Stoning kids to death because they were disobedient? This is not a message of love and acceptance...
The Bible also talks about how a woman is basically a shadow of her husband and shall only speak when spoken to.
Haha... Right. Never gonna happen.
I'm not trying to offend Christians - I have Christian friends - but I'm saying that some parts of the religion and our nation are practically insane!
Religion has and will exist forever because men need something to strive for and something to blame their faults on.
The Crusades. Killing thousands in the name of God.
People commit crimes in the name of God.
It is unfortunate that it should be so twisted and warped that people use religion as a means to do evil.
But if acceptance is one lesson of the Bible, then shouldn't we just accept those who are other races, genders, and have different sexual orientation?
Why aren't we?
Ignorance. Blindness. You might say blind faith.
That felt good to get that all out. Anyway, what do you think about religion in our country? I want to hear your opinions. I really do.
P.S. A few of my friends and I don't say, "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance.
